- Meeting Overview:
The New Providence School Board meeting focused on financial matters, including the district’s stable financial condition, future budget planning, and the acceptance of a significant donation. The board also discussed school calendar revisions and personnel updates while expressing gratitude to outgoing and current members for their service.
The financial report presented during the meeting revealed that the school district concluded the fiscal year with a fund balance of $6,112,440. The district plans to utilize this fund balance in various ways, adhering to state regulations that allow districts to maintain 2% of expenditures as unassigned and unrestricted. This amounts to approximately $1.2 million. Additionally, $981,000 is designated as excess surplus for future expenditures, and $1 million is allocated for the current fiscal year 2024-2025. Looking ahead, $1.6 million in excess surplus is reserved for the 2025-2026 budget, with $367,000 set aside for the capital reserve and about $750,000 under encumbrances.
The report also detailed the special revenue fund, which includes grants that have been crucial during the pandemic. The district spent approximately $1 million on federal expenditures, including $400,000 linked to COVID-related grants. Over the past four years, the district received and spent $1.6 million from various COVID-related grants, which have now concluded. Additionally, the capital fund balance reflects the usage of bond proceeds, with around $9.1 million spent and $12.5 million encumbered for future projects.
In a generous act of community support, the board accepted a donation of $17,520 from the Salt Brook Elementary PTA for new upper playground equipment. This contribution highlights the community’s active involvement and support for enhancing student facilities.
In addition to financial matters, the board reviewed and discussed revisions to the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school calendars, which are set for approval at the meeting scheduled for January 23rd. A minor correction was noted concerning an early dismissal date, ensuring a full day of school on February 12, 2026. The discussion also included confirming graduation details and ensuring consistency in the number of emergency days across both calendars.
Personnel updates featured the extension of a contract for construction services related to an HVAC project, extending the contractor’s agreement through September of the following year due to ongoing project needs. The board welcomed new appointees, including a reading specialist and a middle school vocal teacher, both recognized for their experience and anticipated contributions to the district.
Two board members, Rebecca and Jen, were acknowledged for their service, with Rebecca completing two terms and Jen serving since her initial appointment in 2020. The board highlighted their impact on students and families. Additionally, Mrs. Karo received recognition for her ten years of service, earning a milestone award from the New Jersey School Boards Association.
As the meeting drew to a close, Jim Testa provided updates on the upcoming reorganization meeting set for January 2, where two new board members would be welcomed. He reported on the results of recent school board elections, noting a voter turnout of 71.33%. The meeting concluded with a motion to recess into a closed session to discuss sensitive student matters related to harassment, intimidation, and bullying, as well as ongoing litigation.
