In an effort to address concerns around screen time and its impact on students, the board introduced changes to Policy 5516. These changes require high school students to secure personal electronic devices such as cell phones, smartwatches, and Bluetooth earbuds in their lockers for the duration of the school day. The exception allows juniors and seniors with open lunch privileges to use their devices off-campus. The revised policy aims to mitigate the negative effects of social media addiction and promote in-person interactions. For grades seven and eight, the existing policy will be enforced, mandating that devices remain off and secured in lockers. Elementary students are also required to keep devices off and stored away.

The board also considered revisions for staff regarding the use of personal electronic devices under Policy 3322, which now extends to all types of electronic communication devices, not just cellular phones. This aligns staff expectations with those set for students.

Additionally, the board addressed compliance with a newly mandated revision to Policy 5111 concerning the tuition of non-resident students. This ensures that the district’s policies are consistent with state requirements, including charging tuition to non-resident students, with specific provisions for seniors who move out of the district late in their academic year.
