- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Airport Commission has made strides in the land acquisition process for the new Crosswind Runway 927, while also discussing updates on various capital improvement projects and the airport emergency response plan.
The most discussion at the meeting centered on the Crosswind Runway 927. The commission reviewed the progress of the environmental review, which is currently in the phase of wetland delineations. The need for this new runway stems from a master planning effort dating back to 2005. The current 422 Runway, although zoned, does not meet the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) recommended minimum wind coverage of 95%. The new 927 Runway is expected to surpass this threshold, providing better wind coverage and opening up land for development in the city. The commission voted to recommend to the city council to take all necessary actions to acquire six tracts of land for the runway.
A key point of contention was the projected usage of the new runway. One attendee argued that the expenditure for the runway seemed unjustified given the anticipated number of landings. However, another attendee, defending the project, emphasized the benefits for tailwheel aircraft pilots who prefer grass runways for practice.
In addition to the runway discussion, the commission reviewed updates on several capital improvement projects. These include the closure and final touches on the parking lot project, completion of flooring projects in the terminal lobby and conference room, and the relocation of the Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS). The southeast apron expansion and fuel system design work have also commenced, with a kickoff meeting held recently.
The commission also discussed the installation of a new digital display board in the terminal lobby. This board features a QR code for visitors to access a guide to New Ulm, information on available hangar space, and rotating photos of the city. The terminal currently has only two vacant hangars.
Lastly, the commission reviewed and adopted revisions to the airport’s emergency response plan. The updated plan, initially prepared by Northstar Aviation, includes changes in staff contacts and communication frequencies. The revised plan has been shared with the fire and police departments for their review. One member highlighted the importance of integrating emergency response responsibilities among various authorities.
