New Ulm Approves Tax Abatement for Housing Development and Accepts Significant Donations
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent New Ulm City Council meeting, the council approved a tax abatement program to support a residential housing project and accepted substantial donations for both the local library and fire department. The council also discussed a comprehensive safety plan funded by a federal grant and explored new revenue-generating opportunities for recreational facilities.
The city council gave the green light to a tax abatement program for a new housing development by M and D Properties LLC. Located on North Highland Avenue, the project will consist of eight rental townhouse units, each with two bedrooms. This initiative marks the first time the city has offered such an abatement for residential development. The program will provide $99,450 in assistance over ten years, deducting an administrative fee of $4,000. There was consensus among council members that similar measures in other municipalities are becoming common as a means to encourage residential growth.
Another noteworthy item was the acceptance of donations to the New Ulm Public Library and fire department. The library received donations totaling $1,813, including a $1,000 gift from Sylvia Al Heidi for adult books. The fire department was granted a combined $10,143, with a notable $6,890 from Penina Pipeline earmarked for a fire rescue skid for the Polaris Ranger. These contributions reflect strong community support and will be used to enhance services and resources.
The council also discussed the development of a comprehensive Safety Action Plan, funded by a $200,000 federal grant. This plan aims to improve public safety across the city’s transportation network and involves collaboration with local and regional partners. The anticipated completion of this plan is two years from now.
Additionally, the council considered a service agreement with Front Burner Sports to explore naming rights and sponsorships for city recreational facilities. This initiative seeks to generate revenue and offset the Park and Recreation department’s budget deficit. The council approved using the fund balance to cover initial fees, with the expectation of significant long-term revenue.
