New Ulm City Council Advances Park and Recreation Plan with Consultant Selection
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the New Ulm City Council made progress on its park and recreation initiatives by selecting a consulting firm to develop a plan, a step in securing future funding for city projects. The decision to engage ISG as the consultant was made after a detailed evaluation of proposals from three firms, aimed at enhancing the city’s recreational infrastructure and services.
The primary focus of the meeting was the selection of a consultant for the park and recreation master plan, a strategic document vital for obtaining grants like the $10 million Legacy Grant and funding from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This plan will guide future developments and ensure that investments are made effectively. During deliberations, one council member emphasized the importance of the plan, stating, “If we’re going to spend the money, let’s spend it in the right place,” underscoring the necessity of a thoughtful approach to community investment.
Although Bolton & Menk received the highest score from the scoring committee, ISG was ultimately chosen due to its longstanding relationship with the city and familiarity with local dynamics. This decision, passed by a majority vote, highlights the council’s confidence in ISG’s ability to deliver a plan tailored to the city’s requirements. Staff involvement throughout the project was emphasized, with a timeline set for approximately one year, including multiple checkpoints and updates to ensure alignment with community goals.
In addition to the consultant selection, the meeting addressed the implementation of new recreation software aimed at enhancing user experience and operational efficiency. Set to go live in August, the software is designed to streamline operations and improve financial management within the recreation department. The transition process includes staff training sessions to ensure a smooth implementation.
The meeting also covered updates on several ongoing projects and initiatives. Notably, the council discussed the Herman Monument reconstruction project, which is moving forward with potential state funding support. Connections with a law firm through a pro bono initiative are enhancing the project’s chances of securing up to $10 million from the Legacy funding. Meetings with state representatives have been fruitful, with plans to draft a bill for state legislature consideration in 2026.
Furthermore, the council celebrated the acceptance of a $6,000 grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, intended to support concerts in German Park. This funding will enhance the park’s Thursday night activities, offering a family-friendly atmosphere with traditional and new bands, puppet shows, and free activities. Director Shugal expressed gratitude for the grant, noting its role in fostering community engagement and enjoyment.
The department activity report highlighted the consistent use of recreational facilities, with the recreation center hosting 14 parties in February. The Civic Center also successfully adapted for the recent farm show by removing ice from the North Arena, benefiting vendors and attracting significant attendance. Additionally, the city is continuing its ash tree removal program across various parks, with plans to replant once weather permits, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance green spaces.
