New Ulm City Council Celebrates Successful Sister City Exchange and Prepares for Upcoming Intern Arrival
- Meeting Overview:
The recent New Ulm City Council meeting focused on strengthening international ties through the Sister Cities Commission, discussing the logistics of welcoming an intern from Germany, and recapping a successful cultural exchange trip to Germany involving local community members.
The meeting delved deeply into the recent cultural exchange trip to Germany. Participants from New Ulm, referred to as the “NAR” group, recently visited Germany and were involved in several cultural activities, including a visit to a wood carver in Titusy. They participated in traditional celebrations and shared their experiences with Council members. One participant described the use of “clackers,” an item utilized in dancing, and highlighted how wearing similar jackets and hats fostered a sense of unity among the group. Additionally, they distributed items representing New Ulm, such as city bricks, as part of their marketing efforts supported by donations for promotional materials.
The NAR group, consisting of 15 members and four guests, engaged in various traditions, including the raising of the “narintree,” which required teamwork and stamina. They emphasized the importance of maintaining connections with German groups, with aspirations to invite them to New Ulm for future cultural exchanges. The participants reflected on the community engagement observed in the German town, where local emergency services and restaurants supported the festivities. They recognized the significance of involving families and children in local celebrations in New Ulm, drawing parallels with similar family-oriented events in Germany.
Logistical details of the trip were also discussed, including accommodations, which consisted of hotel stays at locations such as the Mercure Hotel in Freiburg and another in Rotvile. This aspect was clarified by one participant, who noted that local families did not accommodate them but instead opted for hotel facilities. The trip’s success was further underlined by the warm reception they received in Germany, which included a band, a carnival dance group, and a parade attended by approximately 20,000 people, positioning the New Ulm group as honored guests.
Turning to new business, attention was given to the arrival of an intern, Samuel, from Germany, scheduled for September 2. Samuel is set to stay until November 24, working at Shell’s Brewery. Arrangements for his stay include accommodations with host families, Sharon and Dick Seabol, and Jim and Connie Bartles. Council members discussed logistical details, such as securing a rental car for Samuel, with one member volunteering to pick him up from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. A welcoming event for Samuel is planned for September 8, with considerations for hosting it at a bowling venue. The council acknowledged the need to finalize plans promptly to ensure a smooth transition for Samuel upon his arrival.
The financial aspects of the Sister Cities Commission were reviewed, highlighting an expense of $26,576 for a recognition award reception and plaque, along with other related expenditures. The financial report, reflecting a balance of $1,162.99 and a total of $7,947 on hand, was approved without discussion. Another intern is expected to participate in various activities, including organizing an event at the Danube office in July and assisting with a school childcare and vacation program in Alm starting mid-July.
Old business included preparations for the brat stand events scheduled for June 22 and August 25. Members discussed the need for additional volunteers and confirmed the availability of necessary supplies, including plates and gloves. The council expressed optimism about securing the required assistance as the event dates approach.
