New Ulm Considers Integrating Tree Commission into Park and Recreation
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Tree Advisory Commission meeting addressed topics, including a potential consolidation with the Park and Recreation Commission, ongoing efforts to control buckthorn and the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), as well as updates on tree removal projects. The meeting explored strategies for maintaining local ecological health and adapting to administrative changes.
One of the most notable discussions at the meeting concerned the potential consolidation of the Tree Advisory Commission into the Park and Recreation Commission. This idea was brought up with the anticipation of a more streamlined approach to city management. A city council work session slated for November will further explore this proposal. The consolidation is intended to enhance the coordination of efforts related to tree management and park maintenance. Reassurances were made that the responsibilities and priorities of the Tree Advisory Commission would not be overshadowed if the integration occurs. The public and relevant commissioners are invited to attend this session.
The meeting also featured a detailed update on the management of buckthorn, an invasive species posing challenges to local ecosystems. Joel Gartner, a volunteer with experience in native plant preservation, shared insights into controlling buckthorn, which is notorious for its rapid spread and resilience. Gartner emphasized the importance of removing old, berry-producing shrubs, which contribute to the buckthorn population. He advocated for cutting these shrubs and applying chemicals to stumps to prevent regrowth. Additionally, he suggested introducing alternative plant species that could compete with buckthorn, potentially mitigating its impact.
Gartner also highlighted the preservation of a native prairie remnant in Pollinator Park, an area he described as a vital ecosystem due to its undisturbed nature. He proposed the removal of non-native trees in the area, such as catalpas and ginkgo, and recommended planting native species like oak and aspen to maintain ecological integrity. The commission discussed the possibility of relocating these trees using a tree spade, rather than removing them entirely, to preserve the city’s greenery.
In the realm of old business, the commission reviewed the status of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) management program. A surplus from the disease tree reimbursement program was noted, resulting from increased requests related to EAB removals. Approximately 61 infected ash trees remain in city parks, with plans to reduce this number to about 20 by the end of winter. A contractor is scheduled to continue ash tree removals in the south German park area, which is expected to decrease the number of infected trees.
Further updates included a grant application submitted to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the removal of 382 ash trees from city boulevards and parks. The application seeks $362,900 in funding, with the city committing in-kind contributions, including stump grinding services. The city anticipates a decision on the grant by February, with the project completion targeted for June 2027, if funded.
The meeting also touched on the Big Tree Contest, which saw the fewest entries in its history, with only four participants. Austin Lorent’s Ginkgo tree was declared the winner. The commission humorously considered expanding the contest to include other species or categories, such as the largest female buckthorn tree, to encourage greater participation in the future.
During new business, the commission elected new officers. Jordy Vite was elected chairperson, and Lee was nominated as vice chairperson, both without opposition. The meeting schedule for January was set, and outgoing commissioners were acknowledged for their contributions, with certificates of appreciation mentioned as a formal acknowledgment of their service. Although the mayor was unable to attend, she conveyed her gratitude for the commissioners’ efforts.
