New Ulm Explores Renewable Energy Collaboration with Germany’s Region 9
- Meeting Overview:
During the New Ulm City Council meeting, members discussed a range of topics, with the most development being the opportunity for New Ulm to engage in a renewable energy information exchange with Germany’s Region 9. The council approved sending an energy services representative to Germany in June 2025 to participate in this delegation. The representative will gain insights into Germany’s advanced renewable energy practices, including biodigesters and clean energy technologies, which could be beneficial for New Ulm’s local energy initiatives.
The council also addressed several infrastructure projects. They approved a fiber installation project to enhance internet security and performance for the wastewater treatment plant. This project involves both above-ground and underground installations, with a budget that includes costs for additional boring and labor.
Additionally, the council discussed the planned replacement of a 60-year-old transformer at the Center Street substation. The project involves a lengthy procurement process, with the transformer expected to arrive by late 2027. The council approved the engineering proposal for this project, which includes plans for the new transformer and an updated Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan.
Other decisions included the approval of a security camera phase completion, with the installation of the Verata security camera system across public utilities facilities. This project, budgeted at $55,085.35, aims to enhance security and was funded through departmental building improvement accounts and reserves.
