- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Heritage Preservation Commission approved a design review for facade updates to the old Guten House on North Minnesota.
During the meeting, the commission discussed the proposed changes in detail. The updates will include removal of the corrugated steel currently in place above the windows, which will be substituted with cement board painted gray. This alteration is part of a broader effort to refresh the storefront’s appearance while maintaining historical integrity. The commission confirmed that the signage would be within the allowable square footage for the property, and there was consensus on the aesthetic improvements provided by the new gray palette.
Additionally, attendees shared insights from a recent workshop they attended in Red Wing, covering sessions on heritage preservation and Main Street collaboration. These experiences were seen as valuable for informing future projects in the New Ulm area.
The commission also briefly touched on the need to update the city’s color palette guide for building facades, prompted by recent changes at the Kaiserhoff building. There is an ongoing effort to expand the color options available to property owners.
