- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Human Rights Commission gathered on October 28th to tackle various agenda items, notably focusing on securing funding for future community events and enhancing engagement through strategic initiatives. The meeting also highlighted ongoing community efforts, such as a poster and essay contest, and addressed logistical aspects of upcoming events.
The meeting commenced with discussions around the budget, revealing a balance of $1,241 designated for awards associated with the commission’s poster and essay contest. While the contest was a major focus, it was noted that only one poster entry had been received by the deadline, prompting a conversation about the contest’s future viability and its role in student engagement. One member expressed disappointment over the low participation.
In connection with the contest and other community events, the commission examined different strategies to improve event planning and execution. Feedback from previous events, such as the Welcoming Week event, was analyzed. Despite the limited planning time, the event was deemed successful, though it was suggested that future gatherings could benefit from increased advertising and a more diverse selection of food vendors.
The commission also discussed broader community engagement efforts, including a community needs survey. The survey had received minimal responses, leading to suggestions for enhancing its visibility and distribution. Ideas included leveraging the city’s social media platforms and website, as well as placing QR codes in key locations like clinics, churches, and libraries to encourage participation. One member highlighted the necessity of collecting more community input, emphasizing that additional information would be beneficial for future planning.
In an effort to strengthen community partnerships, the commission considered a proposal from a wellness collective to sponsor a free class in December for Human Rights Awareness Month. While budget constraints were a concern, the commission agreed to explore the partnership further, acknowledging its potential for survey promotion during these events.
The meeting also touched on logistical needs for future events, such as acquiring additional resources like trash cans, tables, chairs, and portable restrooms. The importance of clear signage was noted, with suggestions to improve communication about event purposes to enhance community engagement.
Another topic was the nomination process for the annual Human Rights Award. The commission acknowledged that it was behind schedule this year due to a missed meeting in September. A new nomination deadline was set for December 13th, with plans to update documentation accordingly and discuss nominations at the December meeting. The award, which consists of a plaque and a ceremony, celebrates contributions to social justice and the advancement of human rights in the New Ulm area.
In addition to event planning and awards, the commission addressed the student commissioner vacancy, urging members to promote the opportunity among students. The discussion also included an emphasis on civic engagement, with encouragement for community members to participate in upcoming elections.
