New Ulm Human Rights Commission Plans for Welcoming Week and Reviews Event Participation
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Human Rights Commission meeting on July 28 focused on preparations for upcoming events, particularly the Welcoming Week celebration and the National Night Out, as well as reflections on past community engagements like the Bavarian Blast Parade. Discussions also covered the need for promotional materials and volunteer coordination for ongoing outreach efforts.
A central topic of discussion was the planning for the upcoming Welcoming Week, an initiative aimed at fostering inclusivity and community spirit. The event is set to feature three confirmed food trucks, and the commission is exploring the possibility of providing root beer floats free of charge. This initiative would require additional motions to secure donations or discounts, with the commission emphasizing the need to finalize these details in future meetings. The logistics of the event are still being arranged, with a bounce house pending confirmation from the Parks and Recreation department. Volunteers have started signing up, but there is a pressing need for a brochure to effectively distribute event information. One member agreed to update last year’s flyer to meet this need. The commission also stressed the necessity of having enough tables and chairs to accommodate participants.
The commission reflected on the recent Bavarian Blast Parade, held on July 20, which was deemed a success despite the heat. Positive feedback was received about the use of a bubble machine, and there was a notable depletion of candy and yard signs. The commission recognized the need to manage their inventory more effectively for future events, particularly concerning popular items like lip balms. A decision was made to replenish the stock of lip balms and magnets, maintaining a balance between availability and shelf-life concerns.
Attention then shifted to the National Night Out event, where the commission is preparing to engage with community members. Clarifications were made regarding the booth setup, with logistical support confirmed through email. The event is scheduled to run from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and there was consensus on the necessity to procure additional candy for distribution. A volunteer offered to cover the cost, with reimbursement arrangements in place.
Further volunteer coordination was discussed for the Brown County Fair, with a call for more participants to manage the booth effectively. The importance of volunteer presence was highlighted, with one member offering assistance with the event’s teardown. The booth setup is designed to be straightforward, featuring materials such as banners and stickers to engage visitors. The inclusion of a QR code for a survey was mentioned.
Looking ahead, the commission is also preparing for the South Central Minnesota Pridefest parade, scheduled for September 6. Although no volunteers have signed up yet, there remains ample time for registration. Participation will involve walking in the parade and distributing items, in line with past event strategies.
The meeting also touched on the Living Without Limits series, which seeks to address various topics such as low vision and developmental or cognitive delays. There is an ongoing effort to recruit panelists, particularly for discussions on autism. The commission underscored the significance of diverse representation, especially regarding mental health, and noted the challenges in finding advocates or professionals willing to participate.
Additionally, the role of the city council liaison was addressed. A volunteer stepped forward to attend city council meetings from July through September.
