New Ulm Monuments and Cemetery Commission Approves New Columbarium Design to Address Capacity Needs
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Monuments and Cemetery Commission, in its recent meeting, approved the construction of a new columbarium with 168 niches to address the growing need for interment spaces. The commission chose a design that maximizes space efficiency and minimizes maintenance challenges, particularly snow removal, which has been a concern with previous installations.
During the meeting, the commission discussed four potential configurations for the new columbarium. After evaluating the options, the commission selected a design described as offering the “best bang for the buck.” This option includes 168 niches with a cost estimate of $473 per niche, though a final quote is yet to be secured. The approved design avoids potential maintenance issues associated with snow buildup between closely placed structures, a problem noted in other configurations.
The discussion also touched on the inclusion of double niches, which would accommodate couples, a feature not available in the current setup of single niches. The commission noted the importance of planning for future expansion since the designated area for columbaria is nearing capacity.
In addition to columbarium planning, the meeting addressed the ongoing removal of ash trees, a project that began in 2021. Of the original 75 trees, only six remain. The commission aims to complete this task by the summer of 2025. As part of the tree management strategy, a variety of trees, including maple, elm, and crab apple, have been planted to replace the removed ash trees.
The meeting concluded with a recognition of a long-serving commission member, Dale, whose contributions were acknowledged with a service award. The mayor highlighted the importance of volunteer service in supporting New Ulm’s 17 boards and commissions, which rely on 92 volunteers to assist in city governance.
