New Ulm Park & Recreation Commission Considers BMX Track Redesign and DNR Grant for Shooting Range
- Meeting Overview:
In a July 14 meeting, the New Ulm Park & Recreation Commission deliberated on significant projects, including a BMX track redesign and a grant application for a shooting range, as well as approving playground replacements at local parks. The commission underscored community engagement efforts and infrastructure improvements.
The discussion regarding the BMX track redesign project was a focal point of the meeting. The commission received an update on the project’s progress, highlighting a licensing agreement with River Valley BMX established in late 2024. The redesign is aimed at enhancing the existing track’s functionality and safety, particularly for experienced racers. Due to the limited space available, the redesign will maximize the existing area with a new layout. The initial phase, set to begin in the summer of 2025, involves strategic relocations and constructions, such as moving the concession stand and bleachers, preparing a new starting hill, and installing a retaining wall. A representative from River Valley BMX provided details on the necessity of these changes, including elevating a manhole and relocating a water fountain.
The subsequent phase of the BMX project, scheduled for the fall, will involve more extensive modifications, including a full track rebuild. The new design will feature a serpentine shape, requiring significant earthwork to adjust the drainage and layout. The goal is to complete the construction by fall, with the track reopening in the spring of 2026. This project promises to offer enhanced spectator areas with new bleachers atop the retaining wall, lighting installations, and a completed concession stand by summer. Participation in BMX events has reportedly increased, with a successful beginners league recently concluding. The commission expressed enthusiasm for the project, and a motion to receive the BMX track project update passed unanimously.
In tandem with the BMX track discussion, the commission addressed a grant application for the development of a shooting range. The New Ulm Park & Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Sou Valley Gun Club, is seeking a grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to upgrade the trap range. The existing facility, built in the late 1970s, is in need of repairs. The proposed improvements aim to accommodate the growing interest in local trap and skeet teams from three area schools. The grant could provide matching funds up to $100,000, forming part of a comprehensive funding plan that includes contributions from the Sou Valley Gun Club and city council allocations.
Planned enhancements include a new structure to provide shade for spectators, positioned in front of the trap and ski fields. The Sou Valley Gun Club, which operates the facility under an agreement with the city, will manage operations and safety. The range is accessible to the public on designated nights. The commission authorized staff to submit the grant application, moving forward with the project.
The meeting also touched on other notable topics, including the approval of playground replacements at Washington and Lincoln Parks, with new equipment expected to arrive in the coming weeks and installation planned for early September. The commission also reviewed and approved several donations, totaling $2,300 for the month, earmarked for local events and improvements at Johnson and Miller ballparks.
Director Schugle provided an activity report for June, detailing the department’s busy schedule. Facilities like Johnson and Miller ballparks saw significant use, and the Herman Monument attracted over 1,300 visitors in the first half of June. Additionally, more than 1,000 children and 500 adults used the waiting pools. Upgrades to playgrounds and medians were also reported, with safety and aesthetic improvements. The rollout of new recreational software set for August 1 aims to streamline the registration process for community activities.
