New Ulm Prepares to Host State Historic Preservation Conference with Detailed Event Plans
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent meeting of the New Ulm Heritage Preservation Commission, members concentrated on organizing the upcoming state historic preservation conference, set to take place in September 2025. Discussions covered logistics, event scheduling, and new business proposals.
The primary focus of the meeting was the extensive planning for the state historic preservation conference, which New Ulm will host from September 10 to 12, 2025. Mr. Nisley outlined the event’s schedule, which begins with an opening reception at the Shells Brewery beer hall on September 10. After deliberation, the commission reached an informal consensus on a two-hour window from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., despite initial concerns about the timing coinciding with the brewery’s closing. The reception aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere for attendees, setting the tone for the conference.
On September 11, the conference will start with registration and breakfast at Turner Hall, followed by concurrent sessions and a keynote address. The day’s activities will conclude with a social hour at the Grand, featuring engaging activities such as historic trivia. Mr. Nisley emphasized that participation in the social hour would be optional, allowing attendees the flexibility to explore dining options elsewhere.
The final day, September 12, features a robust schedule of tours beginning at 1:00 p.m. These include visits to Shells Brewery and Artstone, as well as a trolley tour of historic homes on South German and downtown tours led by the Sweenies. To manage potential fatigue, the commission agreed that the tours should last around three hours, based on past experiences where tours concluded by 4:00 p.m. The tours will mainly depart from Turner Hall, except for the trolley tour, which will have a separate pickup location. Parking and transportation logistics were thoroughly discussed, with a focus on ensuring a smooth experience for participants.
The commission also explored the possibility of a horse-drawn wagon tour starting at Black Frost and moving uphill. This route adjustment was considered to simplify transportation logistics. Alternatives for parking, particularly at the German Park lower parking lot, were evaluated, and the ease of access for the horse team was discussed.
The meeting also addressed the need for clear communication of the event schedule to participants. There was a request for written outlines of discussions to provide clarity and aid in organization as the event approaches. Mr. Nisley confirmed that HBC members could attend without prior registration, though they would be expected to assist in various capacities during the conference.
In addition to conference planning, the meeting included a design review segment for the Vundberg Collective, a new business located on North Minnesota Street. The proposal, presented by Jackie Bod, involved updating the storefront with new signage and repainting the awning to align with city size restrictions. The business will operate under a consignment model and feature products made by local artisans, expanding its offerings to include men’s clothing and home decor. The commission expressed support for Bod’s business model and encouraged local community participation.
