New Ulm Sister Cities Commission Addresses Travel Concerns Amid Washington Tensions
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Sister Cities Commission focused on potential travel issues for Samuel, the upcoming German exchange participant, amid concerns about potential difficulties at U.S. airports due to the current political climate in Washington, D.C. The commission also discussed ongoing arrangements for Samuel’s visit and the success of their recent bratwurst stand fundraiser.
During the meeting, concerns were raised regarding a letter from Samuel’s mother, who expressed worry about potential challenges her son might face when entering the United States. She feared the current political tensions might result in Samuel being hassled at the airport. The commission has yet to receive guidance from Sister Cities International on this matter. In response to these concerns, a plan was proposed to contact U.S. Representative Brad Finstead to seek a letter of support. This letter could potentially be emailed to Germany, providing reassurance and possibly easing the mother’s concerns. One member noted that a relative from Germany had recently entered the U.S. without incident, providing some encouragement.
Aside from these travel concerns, the commission is advancing with preparations for Samuel’s visit. Hosting arrangements are confirmed, with business sponsorship and vehicle rental plans in place. The reception for Samuel is scheduled for September 8th at the Kegel Club, with invitations set to be distributed to local partners and the press.
Additionally, the commission celebrated the success of their bratwurst stand fundraiser, which raised $54 in tips, though they are still awaiting a final tally from Cashwise. The next fundraiser is planned for August 25th, and members were reminded to ensure sufficient staffing.
