New Ulm Sister Cities Commission Explores Collaboration with Local Museum for Cultural Camps
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the New Ulm Sister Cities Commission discussed the potential for collaboration with the Brown County Historical Society Museum to incorporate German cultural elements into their summer day camps. Additionally, the commission addressed the discontinuation of the German language camp due to the lack of a qualified teacher, elected new officers, and reviewed financial reports.
The commission’s most significant topic was the proposal to partner with the Brown County Historical Society Museum for their summer day camps. The idea, spearheaded by a commission member, involves integrating simple German language activities into the museum’s existing day camps. This collaboration aims to keep the spirit of the commission’s previous German language camp alive, despite the program’s suspension. The museum’s program coordinator has expressed interest in this partnership. The camps will be held on June 16 and 18 and target children aged approximately 7 to 12. The commission sees this as an opportunity to introduce German culture in a manageable format, potentially expanding activities in the future, including music or dance.
The meeting also addressed the inability to continue the German language camp this year due to the absence of a teacher. Despite efforts to find a suitable instructor, the commission decided to discontinue the camp for this year, with the possibility of revisiting the issue next year.
During the meeting, the commission elected officers for the upcoming term. Jane May Hulki will continue as chair, John Borick was elected as vice chair, and Ellie Sweeney will remain as secretary. The commission also reviewed its financial reports, noting a balance of $7,565.37 in the special project fund, with recent expenditures including a welcome and farewell reception for an exchange participant.
Additionally, the commission discussed the cultural exchange program, noting five promising applicants. Interviews will be scheduled once committee members finalize their availability. The commission aims to select candidates who will best represent the city abroad, coordinating with international counterparts to find suitable placements for participants.
