Newbury Council on Aging Plans New Facility, Seeks Funding for Environmental Study
- Meeting Overview:
The Newbury Council on Aging’s recent meeting focused on a proposal to secure funding for an environmental and engineering study as part of efforts to establish a new facility for the council. The session also highlighted a range of upcoming events aimed at engaging seniors and fostering community involvement.
A central point of discussion at the meeting was the plan to request funding for a comprehensive study that would evaluate potential sites for a new home for the Council on Aging. The chairperson emphasized this initiative’s importance, stating that the funding would facilitate further environmental and engineering assessments beyond the initial report submitted to the select board. The goal is to develop a recommendation and budget for construction at various locations. Members of the council were urged to rally community support for the proposal, particularly during the upcoming town meeting.
In addition to this critical initiative, the meeting explored ways to increase community engagement and awareness of the council’s offerings. A dialogue was initiated by the chairperson, encouraging members to share their recent experiences and activities. This discussion aimed to highlight the council’s activities and address concerns that many residents are not aware of the programs available. Efforts have been made to promote the council’s offerings, although participation, particularly from local farmers, has been less than anticipated. Members noted persistent challenges, such as adverse weather conditions, that have impacted the attendance of physical activities at the fieldhouse. Despite these hurdles, virtual classes have been identified as a viable alternative for those unable to attend in person.
The council also discussed the scheduling and participation in various classes and activities. A Spanish 101 class, led by a council member, is set to begin with an initial group of six students, with room for more. Future plans for a French class were also entertained. Additionally, a tech class focusing on phone messaging and FaceTime is scheduled, with feedback indicating the need for a slower pace to accommodate participants new to technology.
Collaborations with the recreation department were highlighted, particularly the introduction of pickleball in June, which is anticipated to attract significant interest. However, attendance for other activities like ping pong and yoga has varied, influenced by factors such as weather and personal commitments. The council acknowledged the need for continuous evaluation and adaptation of its programs to meet participant needs.
Upcoming events were a focus, with the return of the Animal World Experience scheduled for April 23rd. This event, timed to coincide with school vacation week, encourages seniors to bring grandchildren for an interactive session with live animals. Other initiatives include a Dinner Club gathering on April 28th, a Mother’s Day tea on May 6th, and a senior CPR and AED class on May 7th. These activities aim to foster community involvement and provide valuable learning opportunities.
Attention was also drawn to a variety of social and educational events such as a Game Night on May 12th, a trip to the Boston Public Library and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and a “Coffee with a Cop” event on May 13th. These initiatives reflect the council’s ongoing efforts to engage seniors and enhance community connections.
Veterans were not left out, with a luncheon scheduled for May 20th, encouraging veterans to bring guests and learn about volunteer opportunities with Honor Flight. Additional free events for veterans include a fishing trip and a golf outing, further supporting the council’s mission to serve all segments of the senior community.
The meeting concluded with discussions on public safety, particularly in light of recent house fires, and the importance of emergency preparedness through initiatives like Code Red notifications. The next council meeting was set for May 18th, where further developments on the council’s initiatives are expected to be discussed.
