Newbury Council on Aging Plans Packed Calendar of Events and Approves Officer Elections
- Meeting Overview:
The Newbury Council on Aging meeting focused on organizing a series of upcoming events aimed at engaging the senior community, approving the election of officers, and addressing logistical matters.
One of the key highlights of the meeting was the announcement of a partnership with the local library to offer a program on optimizing Social Security and Medicare benefits, specifically targeting individuals aged 50 to 65 preparing for retirement. This session is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, at 6:00 p.m., with refreshments provided by a local coffee truck at 5:30 p.m. The program will cover essential information, including recent legislative changes that allow individuals with pensions to also collect Social Security benefits.
In addition to the financial education program, the council has laid out a diverse array of activities designed to foster community involvement and social interaction. A pottery class titled “Time to Clay” is set for Wednesday, September 10th, featuring Halloween-themed pottery projects. This follows a successful autumn-themed event from the previous year. Additionally, a barbecue event with local firefighters is planned for Tuesday, September 16th, allowing attendees to enjoy dinner while engaging with the firefighters at 4:30 p.m. This event aims to strengthen ties between the seniors and local service providers.
Further bolstering the calendar, a game night is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23rd, at 4:00 p.m., followed by a needle felting class on Wednesday, September 24th, focusing on crafting pumpkins. These varied activities reflect the council’s effort to offer something for everyone, encouraging participation from a broad demographic within the community.
The council also discussed the importance of planning for the upcoming winter season. They urged residents to seek fuel assistance early, rather than waiting until needs become critical. The Triton Snow Angels program, which connects students with residents requiring snow removal assistance, was highlighted. Residents were advised to plan ahead, as the availability of assistance could fluctuate. Additionally, there was a suggestion to involve middle school students in the Snow Angels program to increase volunteer participation, though it was noted that the current volunteer-based structure might not provide financial incentives.
During the meeting, the council addressed the election of officers. Susan was nominated and confirmed to continue as secretary, Chris as vice chair, and Damon as chair, with all present members voting in favor.
The Friends of COA liaison also provided an update on their activities, highlighting various fundraising initiatives, including an upcoming boutique and a calendar raffle planned for November. The Friends aim to bolster community connections by personally reaching out to local businesses. Additionally, they are contemplating a Cinco de Mayo event at the Elks and considering reinventing the fireman’s ball as a Friends event.
In terms of administrative updates, the council approved the authority of the chair and vice chair to sign off on bi-weekly payroll and bill schedules. The director’s report noted the distribution of the newsletter and detailed regularly scheduled programs like yoga, stretch, tai chi, and bingo, alongside upcoming events. A special presentation involving a representative from Senator Tar’s office on the Southern Essex Registry of Deeds Property Fraud Watch notification program was announced.
The meeting also touched on the maintenance of the council’s vehicle, which recently underwent service for a coolant issue and window leak. Repairs were conducted under warranty, and the vehicle is now reportedly in good condition. The council’s elder emergency fund was utilized in July to assist a senior in need of orthopedic shoes.
The council is also planning for future events, such as a Thanksgiving lunch and a community fair, as detailed in the newly implemented “Save the Date” section of the newsletter. Despite the cancellation of the Medic Petty program for August due to unforeseen circumstances affecting the clinician, efforts are being made to reschedule appointments for the 14 individuals who had registered.
