Newbury Police Department Seeks Creative Solutions to Staffing Shortages
- Meeting Overview:
During the latest Newbury Human Resource Board meeting, the issue of staffing shortages within the town’s police department took center stage. The department, currently operating with two fewer officers than its full complement, is shifting strategies to address this gap. Traditionally reliant on hiring already-certified officers, the department is now open to recruiting new candidates who would attend the police academy and undergo field training, despite the delay in them becoming fully operational. This shift reflects a broader attempt to fill these vacancies creatively, given the financial and logistical challenges.
In exploring solutions, the department is considering hiring an intern from a local college to manage administrative tasks such as scheduling, which would free up a sergeant for active duty. Outreach efforts have been made to various colleges, including posting positions on job boards and directly contacting criminal justice programs, although job fairs have not yielded significant results due to the intensive background checks required for law enforcement roles.
Apart from police staffing, the meeting also highlighted the ongoing recruitment for a new library director following the resignation of the previous director, Haley. The selection process is underway, with the board narrowing candidates to two to three individuals, each with relevant experience. The library board, responsible for this hiring, expressed confidence in their potential choices and excitement about the upcoming interviews.
Additionally, preparations for safety and public order during the Fourth of July celebrations were discussed. With the 250th celebration coinciding with a weekend, the police department is coordinating with neighboring Newburyport for mutual aid and has requested a message board from a regional agency to inform visitors about parking limitations and the prohibition of fireworks on Plum Island. The fire department has been asked to station personnel strategically to ensure rapid response capabilities.
The meeting concluded with an acknowledgment of the successful establishment of a reserve compensation fund. This fund is intended to address unforeseen financial needs related to employee compensation, and the board expressed gratitude for the community’s support in recognizing its necessity.
