Newbury Recreation Committee Plans New Pathways and Central Green Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
During the Newbury Recreation Committee meeting on December 3, 2025, attention was devoted to developing and enhancing recreational spaces, including proposals for new pathways and the Central Green area. Discussions included the potential creation of a path for cross-country runners, the introduction of a walking path for seniors and parents, and the designation of Central Street Green for future projects. The meeting also addressed various maintenance issues, budget proposals, and community involvement in recreational planning.
A primary focus of the meeting was the proposal to create a new path through a wooded area adjacent to Central Street Fields, also known as Mantis Field, for the cross-country team from Triton Regional High School. The need for safe running paths was emphasized by Joseph Colbert, the cross-country coach, who expressed concerns about student safety due to the lack of available paths, forcing runners onto the road. Colbert presented a Google Earth map highlighting the proposed path, which would be approximately 200 feet long and about five to six feet wide, allowing two runners to pass side by side. The committee considered the logistics and permissions needed to clear the path, especially regarding liability issues related to using chainsaws on public property, and suggested involving the highway department for assistance.
Simultaneously, the committee discussed the enhancement of Central Green, previously known as Mantra Fields. There was enthusiasm for initiating improvements, particularly the construction of a half-mile walking path designed for seniors and parents with baby carriages. This proposal aligns with a master plan approved by the select board, which aims to enhance community use of the area without disrupting existing fields. The committee planned to present the Central Green proposal at an upcoming select board meeting to secure further approval and guidance.
The meeting also addressed the addition of shade structures in recreational areas. Inspired by various park structures observed during a recent trip to Florida, a suggestion was made to plant trees as a more environmentally friendly solution for providing shade. The committee acknowledged the need for a defined plan and price estimate before proceeding.
Another notable discussion revolved around the maintenance and use of recreational facilities. Concerns were raised about the condition of the grass at one field, with expectations for improvement once the piping clovers returned. The removal of soccer nets and other equipment from the field was also noted. A proposal to install live cameras at the basketball court was introduced, aimed at allowing residents to remotely check conditions via the town website, though the feasibility of this idea depended on existing power and cable connections.
Budgetary discussions included a proposed part-time position at a rate of $17.50 for five and a half hours, along with a $10,000 expense line for hiring instructors or purchasing equipment. The importance of documenting past budget requests was emphasized to streamline future submissions and avoid confusion. The committee also approved field requests for the upcoming spring season, contingent upon the submission of necessary paperwork, including proof of insurance.
In addition to these primary topics, the meeting touched upon various community initiatives. The successful establishment of a book exchange was noted, described as self-sustaining with minimal oversight required. The importance of involving younger members in the committee was acknowledged, particularly in transitioning school representatives to full membership.
