Nightclub Security Measures in Spotlight After Boston Licensing Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board met to address multiple incidents involving nightclubs across the city, with focus on the security protocols and response measures at these establishments. Key discussions involved altercations at Unity Sports and Cultural Club, CapPo, and Hava Lounge, as well as an alleged indecent assault at the latter venue.
The incident at Unity Sports and Cultural Club in Dorchester was a major topic of discussion, stemming from a fight that escalated outside the club earlier this year. According to reports, the altercation led to three arrests, with another individual attempting to strike someone with a baton. The club’s president, Sean Cooper, explained that security personnel were working alongside police to manage the situation. Cooper provided details on the club’s security measures that night, which included ten security staff. The board members inquired about the circumstances that led to the fight, which began when a woman, who had not attended the event, engaged with patrons waiting for rides. Cooper acknowledged that adjustments to security protocols were made following the incident to enhance crowd management and prevent future disturbances.
Attention then turned to CapPo, where an assault and battery incident occurred involving patrons inside the establishment. The altercation, which involved a bottle allegedly being used as a weapon, resulted in injuries to individuals at the scene. Detective Turkot from the Boston Police Department detailed the chaotic events, which began when officers responded to a report of an assault involving a bottle. However, discrepancies in witness accounts and a lack of physical evidence complicated the understanding of what transpired. Security footage captured the aftermath but not the actual fight, highlighting the limitations of the club’s camera angles. This situation prompted the board to emphasize the importance of retaining video evidence for future incidents.
Hava Lounge was also scrutinized after a reported indecent assault inside the club. The victim claimed that an unknown male had inappropriately touched her throughout the night, raising concerns about patron safety and the club’s conduct. Security director Kevin Montgomery reviewed footage showing the victim and suspect engaging in consensual behavior, but the victim’s distress upon encountering her friends initiated further investigation. The board sought to obtain the video footage to validate or refute claims about security’s response, with Montgomery affirming their willingness to cooperate.
An additional incident at Game On involved a physical confrontation that escalated into a brawl. Security manager Isaiah Moore described the fight and confirmed that management had cooperated with police. The board reviewed video evidence to understand the sequence of events, with staff maintaining that the altercation unfolded rapidly and unexpectedly.
The board also addressed various operational issues at other venues, including an after-hours operation violation at Land of Pizza. Owner Vasilios Karazzis acknowledged the infraction and expressed intent to apply for an extension of his operating hours. The board commended his compliance with regulations while his request was under consideration.
