Nisswa City Council Considers New Legal Representation and Adjusts Meeting Procedures
- Meeting Overview:
During the Nisswa City Council’s recent organizational meeting, discussions centered around potential changes in legal representation and adjustments to meeting schedules. The council explored the idea of issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new labor attorney while maintaining the services of the current firm, Flity and Hood from St. Paul, for ongoing union negotiations. The current contract lacks a fixed duration, allowing the council flexibility in its decision-making. The council also debated whether to delay this discussion until receiving input from a council member who was absent.
The council also approved a proposed schedule for 2026, which included a pre-budget workshop in April and a planned retreat, rescheduled from February to March, to ensure greater participation from all members.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the organization and logistics of town hall meetings, which had been implemented the previous year to improve community engagement. The council considered feedback from the community about these meetings, emphasizing the importance of maintaining them while addressing logistical challenges, such as microphone issues. Suggestions included holding one town hall in mid-June instead of May to avoid conflicts with graduations and vacations. The idea of hosting the event at the community center was proposed to leverage better acoustics and facilities, though no final decision was made pending further discussions with absent members.
Personnel changes within the city administration also necessitated adjustments in council appointments and roles. With the city administrator position set to be filled through interviews in mid-February, an interim appointment was discussed. Additionally, the council decided to eliminate the city clerk position, transitioning to a combined city administrator/clerk role. Council members reviewed their liaison roles, with most expressing satisfaction with maintaining their 2025 assignments for the new year. However, the appointment of a new fire relief association trustee was deferred until input could be obtained from the absent council member.
The council also deliberated on the draft schedule for the upcoming year, deciding to remove a tentative Grand View workshop slated for February.
