North Brunswick School Board Celebrates Spelling Bee Champions and ESL Team’s Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The North Brunswick Township Board of Education meeting on March 4th spotlighted notable achievements within the district, particularly recognizing spelling bee champions and the efforts of the ESL team at Livingston Park Elementary School. The board also addressed the impact of a recent snowstorm on school operations, celebrated the Model UN team’s accomplishments, and discussed future educational initiatives and staffing updates.
The meeting commenced with the celebration of the district’s spelling bee champions. The English Language Arts (ELA) supervisor introduced two standout students: Professi, the middle school winner, and Duba Yarlaga from Lynwood School. Professi clinched victory after 15 rounds with the word “prognosticate,” while Duba triumphed after 22 rounds with “ballistics.” Both students were lauded for their dedication and skill, and the board expressed immense pride in their accomplishments. The winners will advance to the Middlesex County Spelling Bee competition, slated for March 14th at the middle school.
The board then shifted focus to the ESL team at Livingston Park Elementary School, acknowledging their contributions to fostering inclusivity and community. The team organized a Valentine’s breakfast event for ESL students and their families, which drew over 100 parents and featured breakfast, crafts, and student performances. The initiative was praised for building strong ties between the school and multilingual families, emphasizing the importance of creating an inclusive educational environment. The board formally recognized the efforts of the ESL teachers, Miss Reichus, Miss Keerman, Miss Facelman, and Miss Hustnine, through resolutions read into the minutes.
In response to a recent snowstorm, the board’s administrative report addressed the challenges faced by the district. The storm, which began late on a Sunday, brought heavy snow and ice, complicating school operations. Staff members, including those in building and grounds, were commended for their efforts in snow removal and ensuring the safe reopening of schools. The board acknowledged that a delayed opening might have been prudent given the storm’s severity and maintained a focus on minimizing disruptions to the school calendar, particularly the upcoming spring break.
The meeting also highlighted the Model UN team’s success, with the group earning the outstanding delegation award for the third consecutive year at a recent conference. Eighteen students were recognized for their performance.
Recognition was also given to Schwan Tez Grimes and Vivian Turpac, two high school students who received the GMC sportsmanship award. Additionally, the board expressed gratitude toward security staff for their role in managing a recent power outage and outlined plans for installing new transformers during spring break.
In other developments, the board discussed staffing updates and educational initiatives. The search for a new principal at Parsons School is underway, with completion expected by March. The district is recruiting for various vacancies for the 2025-2026 school year, utilizing job fairs and a new recruitment platform, Leadline Line, to attract qualified candidates. The board also announced that Kayla Weisen would receive the new Pathway to the Profession Award, recognizing her contributions as a substitute teacher and her future role as a science teacher for the 2026-2027 school year.
Further, the board discussed upcoming events, including the annual Governor’s Educator of the Year and Education Support Staff of the Year awards, which will be recognized at the May 6th board meeting. Retirees will be honored at a subsequent meeting in June.
Committee reports provided additional insights, with discussions on the fiscal year 2027 budget, potential funding changes, and the importance of maintaining educational quality. The education committee reported on the Power Program, a mentorship initiative with the North Brunswick Township Police Department, aimed at enhancing student engagement and leadership.
During the public session, the president of the North Brunswick Township Education Association expressed gratitude for the board’s support of the Valentine’s Day breakfast and detailed various events funded through NJAA and NBTA grants. These initiatives, totaling $12,464, included STEM nights, PBIS prizes, and community engagement activities.
