- Meeting Overview:
In a recent gathering, the North Brunswick School Board’s meeting was marked by a celebration of student achievements and the approval of key administrative positions. The meeting was significant for acknowledging the exemplary performances of winter sports teams, including the historic success of the boys’ bowling team and the girls’ swimming team’s consecutive division championships. The board also approved the appointments of two new administrators, addressed the need for adequate staff salaries, and voted on personnel matters.
The meeting commenced with the recognition of student athletes by the athletic director, who introduced the winter sports teams. The boys’ track team was celebrated for winning the white division and relay titles, with Coach Schwan Grimes accentuating their accomplishments. The girls’ track team was equally praised for their individual and team successes. The girls’ basketball team received commendations for their sportsmanship and marked improvement over the season.
The boys’ basketball team was also acknowledged for their performance, with two players, Brandon McCain and Tommy Coroma, receiving specific mention for their standout roles. The boys’ bowling team, guided by Coach McCormic, was highlighted for an exceptional season, winning the white division and state sectional championships. The success of the bowling team was underscored as the best in the history of North Brunswick, with recognition of the team’s banner as a milestone.
The team’s seniors were also acknowledged.
The swimming team’s coach presented several accolades, including the white division champions and sportsmanship awards. The growth of the boys’ swimming team from eight to 18 members was a highlight, as was the girls’ team securing consecutive division championships. Swimmers, including Alexis Park and Cadence, were individually recognized for their achievements at various events. The team’s consistent demonstration of sportsmanship was notable, having won the sportsmanship award for the 11th time.
The administrative report, while addressing routine updates, also included a moment of silence for a recently passed night custodian, Jeffrey Smith. The successful hosting of a Model UN conference by the Model UN club was a notable academic achievement. The upcoming school musical production, “Grease,” performed by The Alchemist, was promoted, and logistics for kindergarten registration were announced. The report also made note of the upcoming spring break and the observance closure for the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Fitr.
The meeting was also significant for the introduction of two women assuming important administrative roles. Miss Domin Alderman was introduced as the director of elementary instruction at Jud Elementary School, and Miss Norma Jackson as the assistant principal at Lynwood School. Both expressed their gratitude and eagerness to contribute to their new positions.
Student reports illuminated the diversity of activities, mentioning the Annual Rockathon, a faculty basketball game, a dodgeball tournament, and a National Honor Society induction ceremony. The work of the Key Club and National Honor Society during parent-teacher conferences was also acknowledged.
Committee discussions were comprehensive, with the Education Committee examining matters such as ongoing testing, tutoring plans, STEM grants, and the introduction of the “Help Me” app to support the school community. The Human Resources Committee provided updates on staffing, including job postings and new hires, while the Business Operations Committee reviewed items related to school facilities and a grant application. Future transportation for charter school students and a draft calendar for the 2025-2026 school year were also topics of discussion.
A particularly issue discussed was the proposed budget, with the negotiation team expressing concerns about the need for adequate resources for staff salary increases. This came amid discussions on the impact of staff resignations on the district. A public session featured a plea from a representative of the North Brunswick Township Education Association, who urged the board to ensure the proposed budget accommodated proper investment in staff salaries.
The board addressed personnel matters in a closed executive session and later voted in the open session to rescind the termination of an employee, approve a settlement agreement, and accept the resignation of the same employee. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
