North Brunswick School Board Honors STEM Scholars and Maintenance Technician Andre Kolic
- Meeting Overview:
The North Brunswick School Board meeting held on October 29, 2025, centered around honoring achievements within the district, recognizing two sisters, Tenny and Ouna Olua, for their selection into the prestigious Governor’s STEM Scholars Program, and acknowledging maintenance technician Andre Kolic for his contributions to improving school facilities. The meeting also covered updates on academic assessments, grant acquisitions, and community collaborations.
The board meeting commenced with a focus on celebrating the accomplishments of students and staff, starting with Tenny and Ouna Olua. The sisters were recognized for their selection into the Governor’s STEM Scholars Program, a highly selective initiative that chose only 101 students from across New Jersey. The program aims to immerse top students in New Jersey’s innovative ecosystem. Dr. Zakowski, the superintendent, introduced the presentation.
Janine Lanir, the science supervisor, spoke on behalf of the Olua sisters. The board read resolutions recognizing Tenny and Ouna’s achievements, outlining the significance of their selection to the STEM program. Both sisters expressed gratitude for their opportunity and acknowledged the support of their parents and teachers. Tenny mentioned her research on healthcare-related topics, while Ouna focused on a project addressing baby boom syndrome in underrepresented communities.
The meeting then transitioned to recognize Andre Kolic, a maintenance technician at Living Sync Park School, for his significant efforts in improving classroom conditions. Kolic’s dedication extended beyond his official responsibilities, working after hours to enhance the learning environment. The board passed a resolution to honor Kolic. Amidst applause, Kolic expressed his gratitude.
Following these recognitions, Mercy Chang, the director of accountability and special programs, presented on the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment. The DLM is designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities and measures progress towards academic standards in a manner accommodating their unique learning needs. Chang explained the assessment’s operation based on a learning map model, covering subjects such as English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. She reported on the number of students tested and highlighted improvements in student performance, particularly in ELA and math.
Christopher Harry, the director of pupil personnel services, presented quantitative data on the DLM results for special education students. He noted meaningful growth across all subjects, with specific percentages of students reaching various proficiency levels in ELA and math. Harry acknowledged the dedication of students, educators, and families in achieving these results, emphasizing collaboration in educational success.
The meeting also featured a report on the successful administration of Advanced Placement (AP) exams, highlighting a growth in AP course offerings. An impressive number of 336 students participated in AP exams, with high percentages achieving scores of three or higher in subjects such as AP Biology, Calculus, AP Language and Composition, AP Spanish Language and Culture, and AP US History.
A grant acquisition led by staff members, including Kate Dwire and Mercy Chang, secured $198,000 for high-quality instructional materials aimed at improving literacy standards for grades 5 through 8. The urgency of the grant application process was noted, and the staff’s collaborative efforts resulted in a successful outcome.
The board also discussed collaborations with local township organizations, recognizing partnerships that enhance student experiences. This included student volunteer work at park cleanups, fire safety presentations, and food drives, reinforcing community ties and the notion that North Brunswick is a great place to learn, work, and live.
Dr. Zakowski then provided details about the proposed school calendar for the 2026-2027 school year, involving collaborative efforts and feedback from staff. The calendar was approved following a motion supported by a roll call vote.
