During the North Miami City Council’s recent meeting, the most significant topic was the proposed upgrade of the city’s water meter system to an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). This system promises to improve monitoring of water usage, potentially generating substantial savings and increased revenue for the city over the next two decades. The council discussed a financing plan involving a $44.8 million loan from Bank of America to fund the initial investment, expected to yield $153.5 million in increased water bill collections and $2.9 million in operating savings over 20 years. However, the plan also entails a total repayment of $66.8 million, including $22 million in interest. Concerns were raised about the potential financial risk, including the possibility of not collecting some of the projected revenue and the impact on the city’s ability to finance a new water plant.
