North Miami Council Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month, Addresses Public Works and Safety Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The North Miami City Council recently convened to celebrate Haitian Heritage Month, recognize the dedication of public works employees, and emphasize safety initiatives, alongside other community matters.
The meeting commenced with a special presentation honoring Haitian Heritage Month, led by a council member who highlighted the contributions of the Haitian-American community to the city. The event featured internationally recognized Haitian artist Luis Wma, celebrated for his vibrant folk art that captures the essence of tropical jungles and wildlife. Wma’s artwork was displayed, and he expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, reflecting on his 54-year career and the enduring connection to his heritage.
Steve Marcelis, chair of the Haitian Heritage Month committee, spoke about the importance of cultural recognition, inviting residents to partake in planned activities such as bike rides and cooking classes to deepen appreciation for Haitian culture. These events aim to foster understanding and community unity.
Alongside cultural celebrations, the council proclaimed May 17 to 23 as National Public Works Week. This proclamation acknowledged the often-unseen efforts of the over 100 workers in the public works department. The council expressed gratitude for their contributions, urging the community to recognize the critical services provided by these employees. Certificates of recognition were awarded to several long-serving employees, celebrating their dedication and impact on the city.
Safety and public welfare were also focal points during the meeting, highlighted by a proclamation for National Safe Boating Week. In light of a recent boating incident at Haulover Marina, the council stressed the importance of adhering to safety regulations on the waterways. A Coast Guard Auxiliary representative provided statistics on boating accidents, particularly involving paddlecraft, urging the community to prioritize safety education and precautions.
Further addressing public safety, a representative from the police department emphasized the urgency of hurricane preparedness, with the season commencing June 1. The council encouraged residents to gather emergency supplies and familiarize themselves with evacuation routes.
In addition to these topics, the meeting featured several announcements aimed at enhancing community engagement and support. The North Miami Public Library plans to distribute Haitian Creole flashcards to residents, while a series of wellness classes in local parks and a small business grant program were highlighted as opportunities for community development and well-being. The formation of the North Miami Youth Council was also announced.
During the meeting, the council approved board appointments to the Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission, and Library Board. Additionally, a resolution was passed to authorize negotiation for sewer system improvements, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance city infrastructure.
The meeting concluded with a citizen forum where resident Janette Delarman Bayas confirmed her candidacy for circuit court judge, receiving a warm acknowledgment from the council.
