The council acknowledged the importance of senior citizens to the community with the celebration of two centenarians, recognizing their rich histories and the wisdom they bring to North Port. One of the centenarians shared her secret to a long life, advising to eat right and avoid drinking and smoking.

The council also turned its attention to the youth of North Port, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the North Port Area Little League. The league was commended for its role in teaching life lessons and building community through the sport of baseball. The council’s support for youth continued with the promotion of the “Float for Life” program, which focuses on teaching children water safety and swimming.

Public safety and environmental responsibility were also on the agenda, with discussions on emergency preparedness and recycling. The city’s Emergency Management Coordinator underscored the importance of having a “go kit” and being ready for emergencies. Moreover, the council highlighted an initiative aimed at educating residents on proper recycling practices, specifically addressing the issue of plastic bags contaminating recycling efforts.

In addition to recognizing milestones and promoting important programs, the meeting also included a moment to express appreciation for city employees. The council proclaimed March 1st, 2024, as Employee Appreciation Day.
