North Port City Council Celebrates Local Achievements and Community Engagement Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent North Port City Council meeting, numerous community-centric achievements were recognized, including the city’s renewal of the Storm Ready certification and the introduction of the “Float for Life” program. Additionally, the council honored long-serving journalist Tim Burquist and celebrated the successful Northport University program, which recently received a national award for community engagement.
The renewal process involved collaboration with the National Weather Service. North Port has held this designation since 2014, and the city is now certified until March 7, 2029.
In a community safety initiative, the meeting highlighted the introduction of the “Float for Life” program, spearheaded by Devon Pulis, the aquatics manager. This innovative program is designed to teach young children, aged six months to four years, essential water safety skills, with a focus on floating on their backs in case of accidental submersion. Northport is the first city in the state to adopt this program, which is sponsored by the Northport Rotary Club. Participants must achieve specific milestones, culminating in a final test where they roll over and call for help while fully clothed, emphasizing the program’s practical approach to water safety.
The council also took the opportunity to honor Tim Burquist, a journalist who recently retired after nearly 40 years of dedicated reporting on Northport and Sarasota County. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Burquist, acknowledging his extensive contributions to journalism, particularly his work with WTSP Channel 10 and previously WWSB ABC7. Known for his ability to ask tough questions while maintaining a genuine care for the community, Burquist’s career was celebrated, with mentions of notable stories he covered, including investigations and documentaries highlighting local issues.
Recognizing excellence in community engagement, the Northport University program was lauded for receiving the 2025 Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Award from the National Association of Government Communicators. This award, for first place in the community engagement category, acknowledges the program’s success in fostering civic involvement among residents. Launched in 2024, Northport University offers a free, interactive eight-session course designed to provide insights into city government and develop future leaders. Participants praised the program for enhancing their confidence in city management and increasing their understanding of city governance.
During the meeting, the council made several proclamations, including recognizing July 31st as International Lifeguard Appreciation Day. This proclamation underscored the vital role of lifeguards in ensuring aquatic safety. The council recognized the significant dedication of these trained professionals, who rescue approximately 10,000 individuals from drowning annually.
The council also declared July 2025 as National Independent Retailer Month, celebrating the contributions of independent retailers to the local economy. This proclamation emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, which create jobs and reinvest in the community, fostering economic growth and resilience. Similarly, National Made in the USA Week was proclaimed to occur from July 1st through July 7th, 2025, celebrating local manufacturing’s contributions to national security and economic prosperity.
The meeting featured a presentation by Cordell Jeter from Eco Rover Chairs, who introduced an all-terrain power chair designed for individuals with disabilities. Jeter emphasized the mission of his company to make this technology accessible in public spaces, allowing individuals greater mobility over challenging terrains. This initiative highlights local innovation and support for individuals with disabilities.
The human resources department received the 2025 Best Wellness Employer Gold Award.
