North Port City Council to Rebuild Fire Station After Extensive Hurricane Damage
- Meeting Overview:
The North Port City Council discussed the future of Fire Station 81, which will be demolished and rebuilt following significant damage from Hurricane Ian. The project is estimated to cost $17.5 million, primarily funded by a 1% sales tax, district funds, and impact fees. Construction is expected to conclude by December 2026, with potential delays extending into 2027. During the construction period, fire crews have relocated to a temporary station near the Mullen Center. The administration has moved to City Hall.
Additionally, the council highlighted the groundbreaking of the Bokeh Chica neighborhood park, aimed at providing recreational opportunities in a previously underserved area of North Port. This new park is part of the city’s capital improvement program, funded by developer-paid impact fees, and will focus on passive recreation such as nature observation and walking.
The meeting also covered updates on the Price Boulevard widening project. Progress has been made on the construction of a double-barrel box culvert at the Blue Ridge Waterway, with the project expected to improve stormwater capacity and reduce flooding risks. Price Boulevard is set to reopen in late December, with detours in place until then.
