- Meeting Overview:
The Norton School Committee convened recently to address various topics, with the appointment of three finalists for the principalship at the JCS as the focal point of the meeting. These candidates, each with a robust background in education and special education programs, were introduced and discussed. The meeting also highlighted the acceptance of an $8,000 cash donation to support a student tour to Thailand and recognized the award-winning achievements of teachers Miss G and Mr. Beard.
Delving into the principal selection process, the committee revealed that the JCS principal search committee had reviewed 17 applicants and interviewed eight before narrowing down to three finalists. The importance of this selection was underscored by committee members who stressed the need for a candidate to foster a learning environment filled with both joy and academic growth.
Beyond the principal search, the meeting gave attention to the recognition of teachers Miss G and Mr. Beard, who received accolades for their integrated unit award from the New England League of Middle Schools. Their Polynesian Travel Journal project exemplified cross-disciplinary collaboration between social studies and math, engaging students with real-world applications.
Further discussions included the superintendent’s role with the local special education collaboratives, following a vote to appoint her as a representative on the board of directors. This decision aligns with the goal of enhancing collaboration and resource sharing among local education stakeholders.
The high school’s active involvement in a variety of programs was also noted. The committee touched upon the success of the MCAS event for third graders, the fourth and fifth graders’ progress in their assessments, and the high school’s participation in career and financial readiness activities. The credit for life simulation and the mock car crash event were particularly highlighted as effective tools in providing students with practical knowledge and awareness.
The meeting did not overlook financial matters, with the acceptance of an $8,000 donation from Fidelity Charitable to support the EF Thailand tour for Norton High School students. This tour represents an opportunity for global learning and cultural exchange.
The superintendent’s performance was a topic of conversation, with varying views on the evaluation form’s effectiveness. While some members called for a more data-driven approach, others praised the superintendent’s communication skills and budget management. The superintendent was commended for her ability to navigate the challenges of her first year, especially in making the budget process more transparent and comprehensible.
Adjustments to the upcoming school committee schedule were made to accommodate other events and commitments. The committee also discussed the appointment process for a new member and the need for clear roles among committee members, especially following recent elections.
Lastly, the meeting turned to the senior class, marking the forthcoming milestones of class night, graduation, and prom. The need for clear and strategic communication about the budget and a potential $6.5 million override was emphasized.
