- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Norton School Committee meeting, the committee approved an increase in grant funding for the North program. The grant amount was raised from $16,150 to $20,000. The meeting also highlighted various community and school updates, including academic achievements and staffing developments.
The increased funding for the North program is aimed at expanding mental health services, particularly those that have already made a considerable impact on the student body. Over the past few years, the program has facilitated 274 counseling sessions for 44 students, with a total cost of around $28,000. A representative involved in the initiative emphasized the positive outcomes, noting increased referrals for students needing additional support and the extension of grant assistance in crisis situations. These efforts have played a critical role in fostering openness about mental health issues among students. A notable development is the establishment of the “Peace of Mind Club” at the middle school, modeled after a similar program at the high school. The club aims to encourage peer-to-peer communication.
In line with these mental health initiatives, the committee discussed the broader community connections that have resulted from their work. A grant of $25,000 was received, further supporting mental wellness efforts. These initiatives include community engagement on various platforms, including local events like soccer games, where families and students are encouraged to have open conversations about mental health.
The meeting also addressed financial updates, with the new fiscal year budget increasing to $35,600 following the approval of additional funding. This budget adjustment includes allocations for transportation, special education salaries, and collaborative projects. The committee expressed gratitude to the town for supporting capital projects, such as replacing hot water heaters at the high school and acquiring a new athletic bus. These improvements aim to reduce transportation costs for smaller teams and enhance the overall educational environment.
Staffing updates were a key focus, with plans to post positions for permanent building substitutes starting January 14. This move is intended to maintain classroom consistency and minimize disruptions. The committee also discussed reinstating elementary specialists and the challenges faced in hiring a librarian who is currently managing dual roles. They emphasized the need for creative staffing solutions due to funding limitations, using long-term substitute positions for specific subjects as a strategy to address these challenges.
In addition to the focus on mental health and staffing, the committee recognized academic achievements, particularly in the Advanced Placement (AP) program.
The meeting opened with a moment of silence for Lilan Costello, a seventh grader at Norton Middle School who recently passed away. The community’s collaborative efforts in supporting students and staff during this difficult time were acknowledged, with special recognition given to Superintendent Jennifer O’Neal and various community partners.
Updates from different schools within the district were shared, including plans for upcoming events. JCS is preparing for a Halloween celebration and a Veterans Day flag ceremony, while Norton High School is celebrating a successful fall sports season and hosting college fairs for juniors and seniors. The school’s PTO Scholastic Book Fair also received mention for its success in raising funds to replenish the book vending machine.
