She spoke about the need for dignified, affordable housing for women in recovery, noting that Grit and Grace serves as a safe haven for those transitioning from treatment centers. The funding will aid in providing essential items and supporting programs that assist residents in reintegrating into society, such as obtaining identification and employment.

In addition to these funding allocations, the board expressed gratitude towards Chief Brian Clark and other members for their leadership in addressing public health challenges. The collaborative efforts were recognized as a step towards enhancing community well-being and providing support to those affected by opioid addiction.

Beyond the opioid settlement funding, the meeting covered several other topics. A significant portion was dedicated to the discussion of land ownership and potential development of parcels owned by state agencies, including MassDOT and Massachusetts Fish and Game. The land, exceeding 40 acres, has been the subject of a long-standing initiative to be placed on the tax rolls for the town’s benefit. House Bill number 5561, which supports this transition, recently passed the House of Representatives and now awaits action in the Senate. The Select Board highlighted the necessity of this development, emphasizing its economic potential and the importance of continued advocacy to ensure the initiative’s success.

Additionally, the board discussed a civic project undertaken by eighth graders at Norton Middle School. The project involved writing letters to government officials about community issues. The board received 50 letters addressing various concerns, such as sidewalks, trash, and water quality. Board members expressed admiration for the students’ insights and discussed strategies to respond to each letter.

The meeting also featured a tribute to Jim Slattery for his extensive contributions to the community.
