John B. Kelly III was appointed as the mayor of Nutley during the latest town council meeting, where he expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the contributions of fellow council members. The council also acknowledged the importance of clear communication regarding financial matters, in response to residents’ concerns over tax assessments and budgeting processes.

A resident’s request for a town hall to explain tax assessments, state aid, and budgeting underscored the meeting’s emphasis on financial transparency. The mayor agreed with the need for clarity and dispelling misinformation. The council discussed the revaluation of the town, the payment of Mecca funds, and the conversion of two-bedroom apartments into one-bedroom units, as well as the limitations of municipal government involvement with the school district.

Event applications for the 42nd annual Columbus Day parade and the Nutley Thriving Survivors’ annual walk were discussed. The council recognized May 19th through 25th as National Public Works Week, June 14th as Flag Day, and June as PTSD Awareness Month, Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, and Men’s Health Month. The swearing-in of Judge Jenet Tempo and the appointment of key town government positions, including municipal judge and town attorney, were also featured in the meeting.

The council discussed the 2024 municipal budget and the adoption of a cash management plan, emphasizing the need for prudent financial planning to mitigate taxpayer impact. Resolutions for tax refunds and appraisal services for real estate appraisals and tax appeals were approved.

The meeting included tributes to a long-time resident, Mr. Kelly, and expressions of gratitude from various speakers towards the community and public servants.
