- Meeting Overview:
The Nutley School Board meeting honored the Nutley High School Marching Band for their championship victories, presented a report on harassment and bullying, and discussed financial reports and budget planning. The meeting also addressed important community concerns, including the inclusion of cultural holidays in the school calendar.
The meeting commenced with a celebration of the Nutley High School Marching Band’s impressive achievements in the 2024 season. The band director expressed sincere gratitude to the students, families, and staff. A resolution was read to recognize the band’s success, emphasizing the talent, discipline, and commitment of its members. The director acknowledged the Nutley Music Boosters for their support, stating, “It truly takes a village and a community to build the team that we have.” The students were invited to commemorate their accomplishments with a photograph, met with applause from attendees.
Following the band recognition, the meeting shifted focus to a presentation of the biannual Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) report, covering incidents from January to June of the previous year. The report detailed 70 cases investigated across seven district schools, with specific numbers for each. The report categorized incidents as unfounded, founded, or code of conduct violations, citing characteristics such as ancestry, race, and disability in founded cases. Measures to address these cases included disciplinary actions and counseling, with an emphasis on strict adherence to the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights. The board was encouraged to engage in a dialogue to reinforce anti-bullying strategies, highlighting programs and partnerships with local law enforcement.
As the meeting continued, discussions turned towards financial and administrative matters. The business administrative report noted the nearing completion of the annual comprehensive financial report for the 2023-2024 school year. Resolutions concerning the capital reserve fund and projects were introduced, with audit findings to be presented in the following month. Preparations for the 2025-2026 budget were outlined, with a focus on a four-month timeline leading to a preliminary budget approval in March 2025.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to community input during the public comment section. A parent, Mark Jacobson, commended the music program, expressing gratitude for its impact on his daughter. He sought clarification on specific financial transactions, including transportation contracts for special education students and payments to the Nutley Police Department for security services, which he confirmed were grant-funded.
Dan Preport, speaking on behalf of the Jewish community, advocated for the school calendar to reflect cultural observances. His comments underscored the importance of inclusivity and prompted further discussion on calendar adjustments.
Another issue raised was Project Graduation’s venue dilemma. Michelle Graziana Whiteside, co-chair of the event, highlighted the challenge of acquiring a necessary ST5 form to secure a venue, as neither the high school nor the PTO assumed responsibility. The board pledged to address the matter promptly, recognizing the urgency of the situation.
Staffing challenges were also brought to the board’s attention by Sarah Marshall, who voiced concerns over reduced hours for lunch aides and paraprofessionals. She urged a reevaluation of budget priorities to ensure fair compensation for essential staff.
