Oakdale City Council Approves Plans for 2026 Street Reconstruction and Redevelopment Projects
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Oakdale City Council approved several initiatives, including the 2026 street reconstruction plans and a redevelopment study for the 12th and Geneva area. Additional highlights included community donations aimed at enhancing local safety programs and a resolution to support CPR training.
The council gave its approval for the engineering department to proceed with street reconstruction projects slated for 2026. These projects target a neighborhood experiencing deteriorating pavement conditions and frequent water main breaks, bordered by Tanner’s Lake and Greenway Avenue. The engineering department outlined plans for neighborhood meetings and feasibility studies to inform the final project scope. A motion was made to adopt Resolution 2025-93, which authorized the city administrator to enter into an engineering contract for a feasibility report. The proposed inclusion of a federally-funded sidewalk along Greenway Avenue was also noted as a significant addition to the project.
Simultaneously, the council moved forward with the 12th and Geneva redevelopment study, a step in rejuvenating one of the city’s oldest commercial areas. The Community Development department presented the study, emphasizing its reliance on extensive public input, including over 300 survey responses and stakeholder interviews. This redevelopment effort aligns with Oakdale’s shift towards redevelopment as the city reaches its growth limits. The Urban Land Institute’s technical assistance program played a critical role in shaping the study, which serves as a flexible framework for future development. The council expressed gratitude for the public’s contributions and the Washington County Community Development Agency’s grant support. The study was approved following a brief discussion.
In addition to infrastructure and redevelopment, public safety received attention through community donations totaling $2,640 for the Oakdale Fire Department. These funds are designated for purchasing CPR mannequins and training materials, supporting a campaign focused on hands-only CPR training. The initiative aims to conduct quarterly sessions, particularly targeting teenagers, to bolster community safety. The council unanimously adopted Resolution 2025-90, confirming their commitment to the campaign and community health.
Council Member Moore shared her experiences from a recent buckthorn removal event, highlighting community spirit and the need for more volunteers. Moore expressed enthusiasm about the participation from the public works team and volunteers, although she noted a decline in volunteer numbers compared to previous events. She encouraged community members to engage in future efforts and mentioned that buckthorn wrenches are available for residents to borrow for personal property maintenance.
The council also addressed upcoming community events, such as a Halloween costume swap and a flashlight pumpkin hunt for children at the Discovery Center. These events aim to foster community engagement and provide entertainment for families. Additionally, the city is accepting nominations for its Volunteer of the Year award, recognizing individuals or groups who have contributed to the community.
Financial matters were briefly discussed, with the council approving a claims roster covering expenses from late September to mid-October, totaling over $3 million. No claims were pulled for further discussion.
As the meeting transitioned into the Oakdale Economic Development Authority (EDA) session, commissioners tackled the issue of the Tanner Lake LLC project. They approved an amendment to extend the developer’s exclusive rights agreement until December 10th, with conditions requiring the provision of all necessary plans and site investigation documents. This extension aims to facilitate the developer’s efforts to secure financing or a development partner, showing the EDA’s flexibility in supporting local economic development.
