Oakdale Joins Just Deeds Coalition, Approves Key City Projects Amid Public Feedback
- Meeting Overview:
The Oakdale City Council meeting on March 10th, 2026, was marked by notable decisions, including the approval to join the Just Deeds Coalition, a step aimed at addressing historical discriminatory housing covenants. The council also advanced infrastructure projects and discussed public feedback’s role in shaping city policies.
The council’s decision to join the Just Deeds Coalition was a standout topic. Mayor Kevin Zabel emphasized the coalition’s importance, noting the resources it would provide to Oakdale residents wishing to remove such covenants from their properties.
Planning Manager Luke Mlan detailed the property owner’s revised plans for a second garage, aligning with updated zoning codes. Despite initial resident concerns about the garage’s size and compliance, Mlan assured the council that the plans met all city requirements. The proposal prompted a 3-1 council vote, with one dissenting member voicing concerns about the garage’s dimensions.
In terms of infrastructure, City Engineer Brian Bachmire presented plans for four key projects, including the 2026 street reconstruction initiative and the Greenway Avenue sidewalk project. Bachmire proposed dividing these into two separate contracts to comply with federal requirements, particularly for the sidewalk project. The extensive plans involve street upgrades and a repaving initiative for Tanner Park’s South parking lot. The council unanimously approved these plans.
Following the infrastructure discussions, the acting city administrator introduced a proposed contract amendment for the police expansion and city hall remodel project. Don Tyson, representing the project owner, outlined scope changes resulting in a contract amendment totaling $8,610. The council unanimously approved the amendment.
Other announcements included the implementation of spring load limits on city streets to prevent damage during thawing conditions, a reminder of the upcoming Arbor Day tree giveaway, and the second annual Oakdale EcoFare, promoting community and environmental initiatives. The council also approved claims totaling over $1.27 million, covering various city expenses from late February to early March.
