Oakdale Parks & Recreation Commission Approves New Leadership and Unveils Upcoming Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Oakdale Parks & Recreation Commission appointed new leadership by electing Steve Meyer as chair and Glen Giacoletto as vice chair. The meeting also featured discussions on upcoming community events and park developments, including the construction of new parks and the introduction of enhanced recreational facilities.
The commission meeting began with the task of appointing new leadership for the upcoming year. Steve Meyer was nominated and elected as the new chair of the commission, while Glen Giacoletto assumed the position of vice chair. This leadership change marks a new chapter for the commission as they continue to oversee Oakdale’s parks and recreational activities.
One of the most highlighted topics during the meeting was the development of new parks as part of the Willowbrook West and North projects. A city council member provided insights into these upcoming parks, which are set to include three new recreational areas. The North Park will emphasize natural elements and trails, creating a serene environment for residents, while the West Park will cater to sports enthusiasts with a full-size soccer court and pickleball facilities. The commission stressed the importance of community feedback in finalizing these plans.
The meeting also delved into updates on ice rink conditions, with one commissioner praising the excellent quality of the ice, which has led to increased participation in skating and hockey. Despite cold weather potentially hindering outdoor activities, the ice has been described as “phenomenal,” and there is hope for extending the skating season into March. However, there were concerns about the safety of the steps leading to the rink, which the commission plans to address.
Additionally, the commission discussed the introduction of a new software system, CivicRec, aimed at improving registration processes for recreational programs and facilities. This system allows residents to register online for events and reserve facilities, such as shelters at Willowbrook, a shift from previous phone and in-person methods. The commission noted that while some residents are still adjusting to this change, the system has already facilitated smoother registrations.
Julie Williams, a staff liaison, provided an update on the indoor market, which has been successful this season with new vendors and a variety of offerings, including chocolate chip cookies and crystal jewelry. With only three markets left in the season, the market continues to attract residents with unique products. Williams also updated the commission on programming partnerships with ISD 622, which have introduced new youth activities like tennis, pickleball, and self-defense classes. These programs, along with a babysitter certification course, aim to engage young residents and will expand in the summer to include family-oriented activities.
The meeting also touched upon employment opportunities for the summer recreation program, with applications being accepted through March and interviews scheduled for April. This initiative is part of the commission’s effort to enhance recreational offerings and ensure sufficient staffing for the busy summer months.
In terms of community engagement, the commission announced several upcoming events. The community walk program will resume on April 1, running through October, with online registrations now available. The annual indoor garage sale is set for April 5, with vendor spaces in high demand, resulting in a waiting list. Additionally, the Oakdale Lions Club will host an open house on March 27, inviting community members interested in membership or learning more about the club’s activities.
An intriguing addition to the community events is the “Best Snow Sculpture of Oakdale” contest, open for entries until March 31. Despite concerns about the lack of submissions, the theme of “favorite sport” aims to inspire creative entries as more snow is anticipated.
Finally, the commission addressed the management of the new pickleball courts within the West Park project. Given the sport’s growing popularity, there was a discussion on whether reservations would be necessary to accommodate demand.
