Oakland Council Focuses on Infrastructure, Swears in New Members, and Highlights Upcoming Projects
- Meeting Overview:
The Oakland Borough Council meeting on January 6, 2026, was marked by discussions on infrastructure improvements, the swearing-in of new members, and the announcement of various projects aimed at enhancing the borough’s landscape and facilities. New Councilman Bill Eard took his oath, and Russell Talamini was elected as council president. The council also addressed the Veterans Banner Program, upcoming street repairs, and the transformation of key buildings in the downtown area.
The discussion of infrastructure improvements took center stage at the meeting. The council highlighted major enhancements to sidewalks along Yawapo and Route 202, which will now allow pedestrians to walk on both sides of the street for the first time. This project is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout the borough. The Victorian building on Ramapo Valley Road was also discussed, with the owner having invested in restoring its Victorian architectural motif, adding a new business on the ground floor.
Another development is the conversion of the Oakland Drugs Building into the Hackensack Medical Building. This transformation is considered a cornerstone project for the downtown area, aligning with a streetscape ordinance that mandates aesthetic improvements such as stamped concrete and decorative lighting. The ordinance aims to create a cohesive visual appeal from Bush Plaza to the drugstore and beyond.
The Veterans Banner Program was another focus of the meeting, with the council noting that 60 banners were hung last year. An additional 11 are prepared for display once weather conditions permit. This program is part of the borough’s efforts to honor its veterans and enhance community pride. The council also discussed plans for Oakland’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which will feature events throughout the year, emphasizing downtown improvements and uniform streetscaping on the north side of Route 202.
Street repairs were addressed, particularly the milling and paving of roads damaged by Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G). These repairs are scheduled for the spring, and the council is working with the utility to finalize dates. The Pleasureland storm sewer rehabilitation project is also underway, affecting Grand View Avenue and Acorn, with completion expected by the end of the first quarter.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) also came under discussion, with the council advocating for updates to the controlled corridor on Route 202 West Glenav, which is under state jurisdiction. These updates include repairing cracked triangles on West Oakland Avenue, replacing outdated traffic lights, and addressing deteriorating fences along Route 202. The aim is to improve the overall condition of the downtown corridor.
The meeting also celebrated the swearing-in of new members. Bill Eard was sworn in as the newest councilman, with his family present to witness the occasion. Eard expressed gratitude to his family and supporters, acknowledging their overwhelming support during his campaign. The meeting also saw the swearing-in of Vincent Dies as Assistant Fire Chief and Jeffrey Bender as a new Lieutenant, with the Fire Department Chief commending their efforts, especially in managing a recent house fire on Route 202.
Russell Talamini was elected as council president, receiving unanimous support in the roll call vote. Talamini outlined committee assignments, with Councilman Saliani chairing public works, and other members leading finance, administration, and public safety. These assignments were agreed upon after individual discussions with council members.
During public comments, residents like Mikeino from 34 Hopper Street congratulated Councilman Eert and raised concerns about the recreation budget. He questioned previous votes against the budget by Councilman Pignatelli and Councilwoman Rose, highlighting its potential impact on safety equipment for summer camps. Matt Tupper from Tenley Highway also congratulated Eert, wishing him luck in his new role.
The meeting proceeded with various appointments and motions. Tessa Fleon, Allison Fleon, and Joseph Glema were appointed to public events for three-year terms. Several individuals were nominated for the zoning board of adjustment, the board of health, the communications commission, and other committees, all of which were approved unanimously.
Mayor Eric Kulmala’s message focused on the borough’s accomplishments over the past year, highlighting the early completion of the Patriots Way Bridge and enhancements to Route 202. Projects in collaboration with the recreation commission, such as playground refurbishment and lighting improvements, were noted. The mayor also mentioned property demolitions on Truman Boulevard and Lenape Lane, paving and sidewalk improvements along Oppo Avenue, and beautification efforts at Great Oak Park.
