- Meeting Overview:
In an effort to protect local environmental quality, the Oakland Borough Council has introduced a dust control policy targeting commercial properties in the area. This ordinance, inspired by similar legislation in Dearborn, Michigan, mandates all commercial businesses to implement measures managing dust emissions.
Further emphasizing the council’s focus on community well-being, two proclamations were issued, declaring May 2024 as Mental Health Awareness Month and the week of May 19th through May 25th as National Public Works Week. These proclamations underscore the council’s recognition of both the importance of mental health awareness in Bergen County and the essential services provided by the Public Works department.
Addressing the community’s infrastructure and public service needs, the Mayor’s report covered multiple updates including road paving projects, the completion of sidewalks, and the delivery of a new senior bus. Moreover, the Mayor appealed for the county executive’s attention to a local dump site and provided progress details on the Bush Plaza project. A member of the Girl Scouts also presented her Gold Award project, aimed at supporting mental health awareness, further highlighting the council’s engagement with local youth initiatives.
Public comments brought to light concerns regarding the local economy and environment. Residents expressed frustrations with obstacles faced by businesses in the area, referencing a nail salon’s denied expansion as an example of the town’s discouraging stance. Additionally, the importance of the local lake ecosystem was discussed, with particular attention drawn to the issue of water levels.
The council’s deliberations included a discussion on the misinformation circulating on social media about a property behind Indian Hills High School. Clarification was provided on the Builder’s Remedy process and the council’s role, emphasizing that decisions were not made unilaterally by the council.
Appointments were made to the Library Board of Trustees and the Arts Committee, both approved by the council. The resolution segment of the meeting addressed various administrative matters, such as the authorization of a grant submission for body armor, approval for discharge of fireworks for the Indian Hills anniversary celebration, and the allocation of funds from the national opioid settlement to the Municipal Alliance.
The meeting also spotlighted upcoming community events, including a baseball and softball parade, environmental commission cleanups, tree plantings, and the Flood Commission’s river walk.
Additionally, the council discussed economic development challenges, especially relating to the downtown area and the intricacies of obtaining state approval for sewers.
During the meeting, the council corrected misunderstandings and misinformation, particularly regarding the property behind Indian Hills High School and economic development concerns.
