Ocean Town Council Tackles E-Bike Safety Amidst Growing Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Ocean Town Council prioritized discussions on community concerns, notably the regulation of e-bikes, which have raised safety issues following an accident. The council also addressed traffic congestion, street lighting, and upcoming ordinances.
E-bike regulation emerged as a significant topic, driven by safety concerns, particularly as children have been observed riding without helmets and often evading law enforcement. Current ordinances allow confiscation of e-bikes from rule-breaking riders, especially those under 14, with parental contact mandated. The council observed that the silent nature of e-bikes increases risks to pedestrians, necessitating robust regulation or public awareness campaigns. Discussions also touched on the potential implementation of rickshaw regulations, drawing comparisons to licensing systems in other towns like Ocean City, Maryland. A proposal for a business license requirement was suggested to ensure safety standards and accountability.
Traffic congestion, particularly on Deal Road and West Park, was another issue. The council acknowledged the worsening conditions and discussed potential road expansions to accommodate increased traffic flow. While Deal Road was deemed feasible for expansion, West Park presented challenges due to nearby structures. The council emphasized the need for collaboration with county authorities, stressing the urgency of addressing traffic issues given upcoming elections.
Street lighting deficiencies, especially in the Largewood area, were addressed. Residents have frequently expressed concerns about insufficient lighting, prompting a proposal for a town-wide survey to identify problem areas and collect pole numbers. The council plans to collaborate with the Department of Public Works and other stakeholders to effectively address these illumination issues, which have been linked to safety concerns.
The council also discussed the acceptance of a right-of-way for Martelli Development Group’s signature homes, a process that has been ongoing for several years. Representatives from Martelli outlined the need for a final inspection to ensure compliance with township standards before acceptance. The council emphasized the importance of continued communication with Martelli’s representatives to resolve outstanding issues efficiently.
In legislative matters, several ordinances were introduced and adopted. Ordinance 259 amends Chapter 16 concerning rental fees for parks and playgrounds, while Ordinance 2510 amends traffic speed limits. Ordinance 2511, aimed at positioning the town advantageously for potential fees from film studios, was also adopted. Upcoming hearings for ordinances related to garbage regulation, traffic enforcement, and bond issuance for capital improvements were scheduled for July 10.
