- Meeting Overview:
The Ocean Township Environmental Commission meeting focused on the development of offshore wind energy projects and various local environmental initiatives, including efforts to reduce plastic waste in restaurants and an upcoming e-waste recycling drive.
A representative from Atlantic Shores, Peter Montalvo, presented a detailed overview of the company’s offshore wind energy projects. Atlantic Shores, a joint venture between Shell and EDF, is developing wind farms off the coasts of Long Beach Island and Atlantic City, extending up to 35 miles offshore. Montalvo emphasized the potential of offshore wind energy to contribute to New Jersey’s energy needs, with estimates suggesting up to 56 gigawatts could be harnessed from offshore sources. He highlighted the economic impact, projecting a direct contribution of $848 million to New Jersey’s economy and the creation of numerous local jobs, particularly through union labor.
Montalvo addressed the logistical challenges associated with transporting large turbine components and the environmental considerations of offshore wind projects. He detailed the process from onshore planning to offshore surveys, which include assessing seabed conditions and identifying potential obstacles. Monopile installation will be used in shallower waters, while floating structures are being considered for deeper areas.
During the presentation, Montalvo discussed the manufacturing and installation of wind turbines, noting that each turbine could produce approximately 80 gigawatt-hours annually. He also addressed common concerns, including noise mitigation during pile driving, the impact of electromagnetic fields (EMF), and protocols for shutting down turbines during extreme weather events.
Another topic was a new initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastics in local restaurants. The proposal encourages restaurants to opt-out of automatically including plastic utensils and condiments in takeout orders. This initiative, part of a broader campaign by Beyond Plastics, aims to reduce waste and promote sustainability. The commission discussed the approach of visiting restaurants to distribute literature and gather feedback through surveys. The goal is to tailor the initiative to the specific realities of Ocean Township and eventually present the findings to the Town Council.
The meeting also featured a presentation about an upcoming e-waste recycling drive scheduled for September 14th at the Ocean Township pool parking lot. The initiative, led by a High Tech freshman, aims to facilitate proper disposal of electronic waste. The presenter assured attendees that the e-waste would be handled by a local business, M Wiing Computer Recycling, which follows industry standards for data security and environmental safety. Various advertising methods, including social media, posters, and electronic signage, are being utilized to increase awareness for the event.
Further discussions included updates on the installation of aerators in Deal Lake and ongoing dredging projects. Fireman’s Pond is confirmed to be dredged, while Lollipop Pond is on the list but not yet funded. The commission also discussed the recent approval of a luxury self-storage facility equipped with individual gas-powered backup generators, raising concerns about the practicality and necessity of such features.
The issue of billboards in the area was also raised, with a request for an update on the status of these discussions. Concerns about the aesthetic impact of large billboards were noted.
In addition to these topics, there was a brief mention of hazardous materials, specifically old smoke detectors containing radioactive materials. It was acknowledged that manufacturers would typically take back such items if mailed back, but many residents may dispose of them improperly. The commission emphasized the necessity of ongoing dialogue and planning for future environmental initiatives, as well as effective coordination with township officials for community projects.
