- Meeting Overview:
The Ocean Township Environmental Commission, in its recent meeting, focused on several initiatives to address local environmental and community concerns. Among the most prominent discussions was the introduction of the “Skip the Stu” initiative, aiming to minimize plastic waste from takeout orders, and a proposed partnership with Helpsy for textile recycling. The commission also examined ongoing challenges related to drought conditions, traffic safety, and development projects.
The “Skip the Stu” initiative drew attention, as it seeks to reduce plastic waste by encouraging local restaurants to limit the inclusion of plastic utensils, condiments, and napkins in takeout bags unless requested by customers. This proposal, already adopted by neighboring towns, involves the creation of an ordinance that participating restaurants would display signage informing customers of their support. The initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers potential cost savings for restaurants.
The commission discussed challenges such as third-party delivery services, like DoorDash and GrubHub, which often include utensils by default. Members agreed on the importance of communication with these companies, although they acknowledged the difficulty due to corporate structures. To gather input and assess interest, the commission plans to survey local restaurants, considering methods like email to streamline data collection, despite concerns about accessibility for some establishments.
Enforcement of the proposed ordinance was debated, with a consensus that compliance would rely on voluntary participation rather than strict regulation. The commission emphasized fostering goodwill and community support, drawing parallels to increased public compliance with previous plastic bag bans. Members expressed optimism about the community’s potential support for environmentally friendly practices, concluding with a commitment to proceed with the survey and tracking responses.
In conjunction with the “Skip the Stu” initiative, the commission explored a textile recycling program proposed by Helpsy. This initiative would allow residents to either schedule pickups of textiles or use a drop-off bin for donations. The program promises environmental benefits by reducing landfill use and possibly generating revenue per pound of textiles collected. The commission expressed enthusiasm, citing the existing plastic film recycling program as a model for implementation.
The meeting also addressed drought conditions, with New Jersey experiencing a 39-day period without measurable rain, prompting a drought watch status. Despite light sprinkles, the situation remains concerning. Discussions highlighted the issue of residents watering lawns, which, although not illegal without an emergency declaration from the governor, is discouraged.
Traffic and development concerns also featured prominently, particularly regarding a proposed medical building at Sunset and Logan. Residents opposed a second exit due to severe traffic hazards, exacerbated by parked vehicles. The planning board noted that traffic issues were outside its jurisdiction, leading to frustration among community members. Speeding on Applebe and access points for emergency vehicles were also discussed, with no immediate solutions proposed.
The commission touched on other environmental initiatives, including preparations for a cleanup at Lollipop Pond and plans for dredging Fireman’s Pond. Financial support for infrastructure work was acknowledged, with gratitude expressed to Assemblywoman Doan. Additionally, a proposal from the Ocean Township Garden Club to enhance gardens at the library was presented, focusing on creating a park-like atmosphere with new benches.
Resident concerns about pedestrian safety at the intersection of Route 35 and Sunset Avenue were raised, especially with a proposed digital billboard potentially adding distractions. The outdated bike and pedestrian plan was acknowledged, with a call for community input to address safety concerns. The upcoming zoning board consideration of a denied digital billboard application was also clarified.
