Ocoee City Commission Advances Diversity with New Learning Campaign
- Meeting Overview:
During the Ocoee City Commission meeting on February 6, 2024, the Commission approved significant initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. These initiatives included a year-long learning campaign in partnership with the Orange County library system, offering free LinkedIn learning courses, and the distribution of a brochure to inform the community about the work of the Human Relations Diversity Board and gather feedback through a survey.
The meeting commenced with Mayor Johnson presenting a proclamation declaring February 2024 as Black History Month in Ocoee. The 19th annual Black History Month essay contest for fifth-grade students was mentioned, as well as a representative from the Human Relations Diversity Board who spoke about upcoming events and a year-long learning campaign.
The learning campaign is poised to be a cornerstone effort in Ocoee’s strategy to promote diversity. Through the partnership with the Orange County library system, Ocoee residents will have free access to LinkedIn learning courses. These courses will cover a range of topics related to various heritage months throughout the year, with the goal of fostering understanding and celebrating diversity within the community. The commission took a stance on this initiative, approving the campaign and agreeing to cover the associated costs from the city’s contingency fund.
Furthering the outreach, the commission addressed the proposal for a brochure that would serve as an informative piece about the Human Relations Diversity Board’s mission and activities. The brochure is intended to reach the community through distribution with water bills. The cost of printing and distribution, estimated at around $1,425, was also approved to be covered by the city’s contingency fund. This initiative underscores the Commission’s dedication to engaging with the community and seeking input for continuous improvement in city operations and policies.
The Commission’s agenda extended beyond diversity initiatives, touching on other city matters that included additional funding for postage, the upcoming Spring and Conservation event, and recommendations for rules and procedures. The road closure for the Spring and Conservation event was also discussed, with consensus being sought for the necessary arrangements. Community engagement was further evidenced by announcements of upcoming events and expressions of pride in the local high school jazz band’s accomplishments and the city’s high graduation rate.
An important administrative topic that emerged in the meeting was the appointment of a new city manager. The Commission requested clarification on the purpose of a draft contract, signaling the importance of transparency and due diligence in the city’s hiring processes.
The Commission’s actions, from recognizing Black History Month to approving educational initiatives and discussing city events and governance, painted a picture of a city administration responsive to the needs and aspirations of its residents.
