- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Osseo Area School Board meeting, the introduction and impact of Ojibwe language classes in high schools emerged as a significant topic of discussion. These classes are part of a broader initiative to preserve indigenous languages and foster cultural identity among American Indian students within the district. With over 550 American Indian students representing more than 90 tribal nations, the importance of these language classes is underscored by the historical marginalization of native languages.
Ethan Ndes, a representative from the Indian education program, highlighted the critical role these classes play in cultural preservation and education, noting how they address the historical trauma inflicted by residential schools that attempted to erase native languages. Ojibwe language instructor Brad Hagen elaborated on the significance of the classes, which not only teach the language but also connect students to their heritage. The classroom environment is enriched with cultural field trips and tailored learning experiences, fostering a supportive space for students to explore their identities.
Students shared personal anecdotes about learning Ojibwe, expressing how the language has deepened their understanding of their culture and history. They emphasized the importance of these classes in reconnecting with their identity and communicating with relatives.
Beyond the focus on cultural initiatives, the meeting also addressed various updates from student representatives. Reasen Atkin from 279 Online mentioned an upcoming virtual event aimed at enhancing student engagement, while Antoinette Brown from OIO Senior High highlighted the success of their health science magnet program and initiatives to foster positivity among students through social media. The representatives emphasized the creation of a safe space for Black students, where they can discuss experiences and mental health.
In another significant portion of the meeting, the fiscal year 2024 financial audit results were presented. Jim Mikon, the managing partner from MMKR, reported that the district received an unmodified opinion. The presentation detailed the district’s financial status, noting an increase in fund balances due to strategic planning and the use of referendum dollars. Revenues and expenditures per student were highlighted, with increased spending primarily directed towards classroom instruction. The audit findings underscored the district’s financial health and the effectiveness of corrective actions taken in previous years.
The meeting also addressed the challenges faced by Educational Support Professionals (ESPs). Tina Collins, speaking on behalf of ESPs, emphasized the need for adequate staffing and resources to maintain a safe and supportive environment for students. Collins highlighted the overwhelming conditions faced by ESPs and the importance of retaining qualified staff who are committed to the well-being of students.
Additionally, the Board passed several contracts and policies, including a custodial contract with Minnesota Teamsters Local 320 and agreements for hourly technical staff and management positions. These contracts included salary adjustments and benefits changes. The meeting further covered the acceptance of gifts totaling $99,385.42 and discussions on policy updates, including those related to discipline, gifts to personnel, and student publications.
The meeting concluded with an acknowledgment of the achievements of district athletes in recent state tournaments and a visit from Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, celebrating the milestone of 150 million school meals served. The superintendent’s report highlighted various student and community accomplishments.
