Old Bridge Council Approves Liquor License Renewals Amid Community Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The latest Old Bridge Township Council meeting, while addressing routine items such as the reduction of performance guarantees for local developments and the unanimous approval of liquor license renewals, was marked by community input on issues ranging from the display of the Pride flag to concerns over the Board of Education’s decisions and the behavior of a zoning board official.
The council approved the performance guarantee reduction for the Oaks at Glenwood Phase 1 after confirmation of over 70% completion of the work. Similarly, they approved the release of the performance guarantee for Wood Haven Village section 2 phase 7, with the developer agreeing to the township’s conditions. These approvals reflect the ongoing development and construction efforts within the township.
Liquor licenses for several establishments, including Red Zebra LLC, a gentleman’s club, were renewed following confirmation of no new restrictions and compliance with procedures. A waiver was also noted for a disabled veteran unable to appear in person, with their license renewal approved as well. The council’s unanimous decisions, with occasional abstentions, underscore the township’s regulatory oversight of local businesses.
The council addressed the renewal of liquor licenses, with particular attention to Red Zebra LLC. The police department recommended alignment with 2022 restrictions, which the owner and manager agreed to. The motion to renew Red Zebra’s license was approved with six affirmative votes and one abstention. The council members acknowledged the club’s adherence to established procedures and restrictions, illustrating a focus on maintaining community standards.
The meeting took a turn towards community concerns during the public comment period, where the raising of the Pride flag was a focal point. One resident called for reconsideration of the flag raising in the following year, emphasizing acceptance and shared values. Another resident questioned a council member about displaying an upside down flag in their yard and advocated for a month-long celebration of Pride. These comments reflect the community’s engagement with and the importance of inclusive representation in local governance.
Additionally, the council faced criticism over the negative portrayal of the Board of Education’s actions, with a resident emphasizing the efforts to address the school budget deficit without drastic cuts to programs and staff.
The conduct of a zoning board official became a contentious topic when several residents, including a transwoman from Oldbridge and individuals from neighboring towns, criticized the official for removing Pride flags from a ceremony. A petition was presented calling for the official’s removal. The councilwoman thanked the public for their input and reiterated the right to free speech and peaceful protest.
The council also discussed the invitation from the Board of Education for a meeting between the council and the school board. There was debate over the awareness of the Board of Education president regarding the meeting, and the need for all board members to be informed was emphasized.
In addition to community issues, the council celebrated the achievements of the 2024 high school graduates and expressed appreciation for the town’s emergency services responding to recent incidents. Upcoming events, such as Independence Day celebrations, were announced with an emphasis on safety.
