Old Bridge School Board Celebrates Teachers of the Year and Scholarship Success
- Meeting Overview:
The Old Bridge School Board meeting was a celebration of educational excellence, as the board recognized outstanding teachers and educational support professionals, and highlighted the awarding of over $200,000 in scholarships to the class of 2026.
One item at the meeting was the recognition of the 2026 Teachers of the Year and four educational support professionals. The board honored these educators with a PowerPoint presentation, which detailed their contributions to their respective schools. Audience members applauded as each honoree’s name was called. In particular, Lisa D’Onofrio from M. Scott Carpenter Elementary School was recognized alongside colleagues like Jamie Inacio from John Glenn Preschool and Kim Polema from Virgil I. Grissom Elementary School, all celebrated for their dedication and positive impact on students. The board also acknowledged the contributions of Nicholas Massone from Madison Park Elementary School for his involvement in programs like Play Unified, and Jennifer Walsh from James A. McDivitt Elementary School for her strong relationships with students and families. Each educator received praise for their unique teaching styles and commitment to their students’ growth and well-being.
Parallel to the recognition of teachers, the meeting lauded the Old Bridge Education Foundation for its role in supporting educators and students through grants. During the meeting, Mr. Slade presented over $5,000 in grants to 12 educators for a variety of innovative projects, such as a $500 grant for a STEAM project at Schirra School and a $350 grant for a sensory project at Southwood. These grants are a part of the district’s strategy to foster educational excellence and fiscal resilience, enabling teachers to pursue creative approaches in their classrooms.
In addition to recognizing educators, the board celebrated the scholarship achievements for the class of 2026. Over $200,000 in scholarships were awarded to more than 200 seniors, facilitated by local organizations, businesses, families, and alumni. This generosity highlights the strong community support for the district’s students, providing them with opportunities to pursue higher education and other future endeavors. The board expressed gratitude towards the donors and staff who made these scholarships possible, emphasizing the positive impact on students’ lives.
The meeting also included a special acknowledgment for Keyshawn Henry from Sherratt Elementary School, who was selected as the paraeducator of the year by Kelly Education. This marked the second consecutive year that an Old Bridge paraeducator received this national honor.
With the celebratory recognitions concluded, the board moved on to discuss plans for future educational initiatives. New curriculum developments were highlighted, including the introduction of “Magic School AI” for grades 3 to 8, which aims to promote critical thinking. Advanced Placement courses, such as multivariable calculus and AP cybersecurity, are set to expand, with projections indicating 921 students will enroll in AP classes next year. The board also discussed expanding classes for multilingual learners and students with learning disabilities.
Further discussions included the expansion of the e-sports program and the early college program, both aimed at broadening students’ career paths and academic opportunities. The board is reviewing pilot math programs at three elementary schools, and the Wilson reading program will see an increase in staff to better support literacy development. Additionally, the elementary school handbook is being revised for the upcoming school year, with ongoing discussions about scheduling for middle and high schools.
In finance, the board swiftly passed resolutions related to curriculum, professional development, and various operations. Transportation efforts are being coordinated to ensure sufficient bus availability for the upcoming spring.
As the meeting drew to a close, public comments on agenda items were invited, though no concerns were raised. Board members shared their experiences attending recent school events and expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement and support. The meeting concluded with reminders about upcoming school schedules and an executive session, with board members offering well wishes for the approaching weekend.
