Old Bridge Township Celebrates Achievements and Tackles Public Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Old Bridge Township Council meeting was marked by a celebration of local student-athlete achievements, the introduction of the new superintendent of schools, and a discussion on public safety issues. Mayor Debbie Walker led the awards ceremony, recognizing the Old Bridge Marching Knights, the girls’ varsity volleyball team, and the girls’ varsity soccer team for their outstanding performances in various competitions.
The Old Bridge Marching Knights were celebrated for their undefeated regular season and notable victories at the US Band State Championships, where they scored an impressive 90.8, and at the US Band Open Championship in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with a top score of 93.8. Their band director credited the students’ hard work and parental support for their success. Similarly, the girls’ varsity volleyball team was honored for their first-place finishes in multiple competitions, with their coach expressing gratitude to the community for their backing. The girls’ varsity soccer team was also recognized for a historic season, securing first place in the GMC Red Division and winning the GMC tournament for the first time.
Transitioning from the celebration of achievements, the council meeting took a serious tone as public safety concerns were addressed. Chief of Police Montagna outlined recent incidents in the Rocky Creek area, including a burglary in progress and an attempted car theft, both of which were promptly handled by the police. He highlighted the challenges posed by factors such as bail reform and organized crime, which complicate law enforcement efforts against car thefts, particularly those involving juveniles. The chief emphasized the importance of community involvement and encouraged residents to report suspicious activities to the police.
The meeting also featured a presentation by Chief Montagna on public safety measures, reassuring residents that police presence would continue to be strong. He announced the graduation of the latest class from the Civilian Police Academy, which aims to foster community trust and understanding of law enforcement operations. Council members expressed their appreciation for the police department’s efforts in maintaining community safety and responsiveness to residents’ concerns.
In another development, the council introduced Dr. Vincent Sasso as the new superintendent of schools. Dr. Sasso shared his enthusiasm for his new role, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the school district and township to enhance community engagement and support for students.
The meeting also addressed various administrative matters, including the introduction of an ordinance to amend daycare program fees, and discussed community events such as the upcoming “Holiday in the Park” and Christmas tree lighting ceremony. These events aim to foster community spirit and provide opportunities for residents to engage in festive activities.
During the public comment session, residents raised concerns about oversized trailers in neighborhoods, warehouse space approvals, and energy costs. The council responded to these issues, with one member noting delays in energy management company personnel changes impacting the Energy Consortium initiative. They assured residents that solar energy options were included in the agreement and that efforts were underway to address these concerns.
