Old Bridge Township Council Faces Heat Over Joy Lane Maintenance
- Meeting Overview:
The Old Bridge Township Council meeting unveiled community concerns, most notably the maintenance dispute over Joy Lane, the proposed amendments to the Oaks General Development Plan, and the presentation of a proclamation declaring March as COVID-19 Awareness Month.
Residents of Joy Lane took the spotlight during the public comment portion of the meeting, voicing their grievances over the township’s decision to discontinue road maintenance services. These services had been provided for nearly six decades, and the cessation has sparked safety concerns among the community members. The residents highlighted a regulation that permits municipalities to maintain non-public highways, which they believe supports their case for continued road service from the town. The debate over Joy Lane’s maintenance status has intensified, with residents recounting historical provision of such services and questioning the town’s sudden withdrawal.
One resident noted the absence of fire hydrants, which had become a critical safety concern during a house fire two years prior. Others lamented the poor road conditions and their impact on safe property access, with a strong call for the township to assume responsibility. Environmental damage and water pollution were also brought up as issues resulting from the lack of infrastructure. The collective sentiment expressed by Joy Lane residents was one of frustration and a feeling of being neglected by the township.
Another major topic of discussion was the Oaks General Development Plan, which included changes to both commercial and residential zones in the area. The council debated two ordinances that would reshape the local landscape. The first ordinance proposed rezoning to allow patios and decks in single-family homes, which were previously unpermitted under current zoning laws. The second ordinance focused on revisions to Edgewood Properties’ General Development Plan. Concerns were raised over the potential impact on local schools due to an increase in three-bedroom units, despite the plan’s original inclusion of additional rooms that could serve as bedrooms. The council also pointed out positive aspects of the revised plan, such as visual enhancements and recreational amenities.
The meeting also recognized the impact of COVID-19 with the proclamation of March as COVID-19 Awareness Month, honoring victims and survivors of the virus. This proclamation was voted on and approved by the council.
The council addressed the draft 2024 annual action plan for the Community Development Block Grant funding program, which was made available for public review and comments. A public hearing was scheduled for April 18th, and residents were encouraged to participate in the feedback process. The administrative report included updates on road resurfacing and curb replacement programs, recent police department promotions, the announcement of the Mayor’s Health and Wellness 5K race, and the closure of municipal offices in observance of Good Friday.
During the council comments section, the spirit of the community was celebrated with acknowledgments of Camp Robin athletes’ achievements and congratulations to recently promoted police officers. The importance of community programs and volunteerism was underscored by the council members.
Financial management concerns were briefly mentioned by a council member, specifically the lack of property reassessment and its implications for the township’s budget. Furthermore, a point of contention arose regarding the individual responsible for leading prayers before the meetings, with concerns highlighted about their social media activities.
