- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Old Bridge Township Council meeting, Debbie Walker was officially sworn in as Mayor, succeeding Owen Henry who has transitioned to serve as a New Jersey senator for District 12. The ceremony also included the oath of office for council members, including Dr. Anita Greenberg-Belli and Mary Sohor, with Sohor being unanimously elected as council president and Greenberg-Belli as vice president. The council set the stage for unity and service in the year ahead, emphasizing continuity and progress for the community.
At the outset of the meeting, Christopher Finegan of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of Old Bridge was introduced by Rosemary Rivy. The newly elected Mayor Walker’s prior 12 years of council experience were acknowledged as invaluable for her upcoming tenure. The national anthem was performed by Carolyn Haney Kimok, and Reverend Chester H. Cornacchia offered an opening prayer, setting a solemn tone for the proceedings.
The change in leadership was marked by a farewell speech from outgoing Mayor Owen Henry, who reflected on the town’s achievements during his term. Henry’s speech underscored the importance of unity and support for the incoming administration, while also sharing his anticipation for his new role as a state senator. He expressed confidence in Mayor Walker’s ability to lead the town forward.
Mayor Walker, accompanied by her family and council member Erik DePalma, was then sworn in by Township Clerk Kate Hutchinson. In her subsequent address, Mayor Walker expressed gratitude to her supporters and outlined her commitment to serving the town. She spoke of the town’s progress, notably the improved bond rating and the reduction in municipal taxes. In addition, Mayor Walker paid tribute to the volunteers and her campaign team for their dedication.
The ceremony was also a moment of recognition for council members Dr. Anita Greenberg-Belli and Mary Sohor, who were sworn in and pledged to uphold their duties faithfully. Mayor Henry and the reelected council members gave speeches emphasizing service to the town’s residents and the spirit of cooperation. Council member Erik DePalma highlighted his commitment to prioritizing the needs of the residents, while council member Mary Sohor called for a unified community that takes care of one another.
A musical rendition of “God Bless America” followed, and a special presentation was made to honor former Mayor Owen Henry for his 12 years of mayoral service. The ceremony concluded on a note of hope for peace, kindness, and love in the year to come.
The council meeting continued with procedural operations, setting the next open public meeting for January 16th, 2024. Mary Sohor’s nomination and unanimous election as council president was a key administrative moment, with Sohor taking the oath of office immediately after. Dr. Anita Greenberg-Belli was then nominated and elected as vice president of the council, also taking the oath of office without delay.
The meeting progressed to appointments for various commissions and boards, including the Municipal Alliance, Historical Commission, Environmental Commission, Cultural Arts, Planning Board, Library Board of Trustees, and department heads. Each appointment was met with unanimous approval from the council, indicating a smooth continuation of town governance.
The financial health of the township was addressed through the unanimous approval of the bill list, which included accounts payable and payroll. The consent agenda was approved in its entirety, and both the Township Clerk and Township Attorney reported no new developments, signaling a period of stable municipal operations.
A period for public comments was opened, but no members of the public chose to speak. The council members took this opportunity to extend congratulations to the newly appointed officials and share their aspirations for the upcoming year.
